What camera to buy?

I'm sure this has been brought up in a thread before but I am thinking of getting into photography (inspired by everyone's talent on the forum) and really want to know what is the best camera to start out with? I don't have much experience and want to ease my way into it, without spending over a grand. Thoughts?

Thanks guys.

Do some research into the canon t3i, Nikon D5100 and the Sony A55.

All three are fantastic cameras! but my personal favorite is the sony a55. Great bang for the buck camera!

Under $1000.

Canon t2i, Nikon D5100, Sony A65.

I've owned all those and my favorite has been the Sony A65

I've owned all Canon products. Started with a Canon 40D, now have a Canon 7D and couldn't ask for a better camera. Bought my mom a Canon T2I and that thing is very cool. The T3I is even better. The T3I is the one I would go for. You really want to put your money in the glass (lenses). The camera helps, but the glass makes the photo. Plus, you can use the glass on future cameras when you start upgrading.

Just got a t2i also. Little cheaper than the t3i, but still takes fabulous pictures. Very happy with the purchase.

I just got a Nikon D3100 with a 18-55 lens and a 55-200 lens for 800. The shop I went to said Canon guys will recommend Canon and Nikon guys will recommend Nikon, but both are very good cameras. I went with Nikon because the deal I got on the second lens and Canon wasn't offering it.

The 3100 is similar to the 5100 big differences are the Mega pixels and the flip-out screen (I couldn't care less for this feature). If you get one from a shop see if they have a class to help you explore the features. I plan on going to one once i get back to St. Louis.

Nikon D5100 is best bang for the buck. I am a huge Canon fan but facing facts the D5100 is a great deal for what you get.

If you don't need lenses and want something portable. I would go with the Canon S100 or if on a budget the last generation S95 is only slightly less as good as the S100.

I got my T3i with a 18-55mm IS lens and a 75-300mm IS lens from Amazon for $860. It was only about $50 more than the T2i with the same two lenses so I went for it.

They've now increased the price on that bundle to $930 though.

If you're just getting into photography there's no sense of dropping all this money.

Find a photography forum and buy a used DSLR for cheap to see if you even want to invest big money into it. It's an expensive hobby.

Panasonic DMC-LX5, Canon G12 or the Nikon P7000 in that order for the point and shoot win. All have excellent image quality and also RAW for editing possibilities.

Always been a Nikon shooter; And what was said about Nikon users will suggest Nikon and Canon users will suggest Canon is SO true.

But in my case, I got special pricing with Nikon and not with Canon; so it made the choice pretty easy. Both choices are great options I think.

But once you learn one or the other, its a tough decision to go back.
