I have aftermarket extended paddles, and I only use the paddles. With the extensions I can change gears with a large degree of steering angle and my hands never leave the wheel.
Mine are like these.

As mentioned by others i use a combo dd and mostly paddles at the track..for some reason even at the track ill push down to 2nd in a hair pin or upshift to second with the stick when launching...i Like the paddles at the track allows for total focus on braking.
