BMW Advanced Car Eye (Genuine BMW Dash Cam System)

I am considering purchasing a dash cam setup for service, valet, certain driving situations, and for whatever else tickles my fancy.

I came across a genuine BMW "Advanced Car Eye" which seems to work with a vast range of BMWs, including our E9X M3s.

Does anyone own one of these units or have direct experience with it? Any advice on dash cams for our M3s in general?

TIA

Seems we are in the same boat. This BMW unit matches the interior b/c it has that same startup screen as the iDrive. Suits my OCD quite well.

Agreed! I am hoping bmw wouldn't put their name on something like this unless it worked well. I don't mind paying for something that works well but I have yet to see an honest review on one of these.

Quick update:

I called my local BMW dealer and they cannot get this part. The part number I provided is as follows:

66212359954

It seems ECS or other reputable retailers will be the best bet.

They'd probably try to charge twice as much, lol.

Perhaps, but I've found with my BMW CCA discount, sometimes the prices are even lower than what's found online.

I have been using dashcams for quite a while and went thru several of them, so a bit of advice based on my experience/preferences:
- do not get cheap ($30...50) Chinese units. That's a given, but some still fall for "FullHD! Gazillion megapixels!!" etc. claims. Units @ $100 and more are a different story. Mini 0806 is a decent one, has it quirks, but I like it so far and can recommend.
- Korean units are more reliable and stable, in general. Still have quality issues, like Blackvue 400 models that overheat. They claim it's fixed in later model, can't verify. But you're looking at $200 and more.
- I'd avoid that BMW branded unit unless you have $$ to burn, esp. if it's not officially supported here. If it breaks, how do you get it fixed?

Features that I find important
- Compactness. Size does matter when you try to fit it in a space b/w mirror, ez-pass, sun visor, radar detector and whatever else is up there. Plus you don't want to attract unnecessary attention, so not sure hanging a cigarette pack-sized thingy on your windshield is wise.
- Mounting method - I like the ones that have a small detachable base that permanently sticks to the windshield. Avoid suction cups, long adjustable arms.
- built-in LCD - after using the above mentioned Mini for few months, I find it quite useful. Alternatively, WiFi connection to download videos on the spot.
- Operating temps and power consumption - you want both to be low, to allow continuous operation not only when you drive, but also while parked. BlackVue 400 triggers "high battery discharge" message every time I get in my car at the end of the work day, while Mini sits easily for a week w/o any adverse effect. High temps also easily kill internal Li batteries. W/o them, your last recording is corrupt once the power goes off... imagine it was actually an accident and you don't have it on video.

Wonderful, thank you Smyles.

Do any of these units capture sound? Or are they typically video only? This just occurred to me, and I apologize if it is an ignorant question. TIA

Smyles, could you recommend me some models that you consider of quality? I am willing to spend up $350, so that should afford me a pretty high quality unit I assume.

TIA

Edit: Also, would a GoPro variant be a good option? I imagine I could mount this to the window, them remove it as needed and also use it for a whole host of other activities. I'm just thinking out loud here.

You know, the more I use Mini 0806, the more I think it's good enough and meets all basic requirements for most situations. If you new to dashcams, it may be the best starter option. You can get it for ~$85 here (no affiliation), and to hardwire, I purchased one of these (both are shipped from China, so budget 1-3 weeks).

Re GoPro option, you can also use your smartphone with an app. But personally I'd have smthg permanently mounted... and not being a huge loss if stolen.

Going to pick up 2 of these shortly, minus the GPS as I don't really care to have my speed logged . Sold on Amazon under the name K1S. Unit has a video out so that if you have a modmynav, it'll output the display to your OEM nav screen.

I bought this one off Amazon and have been using it for a couple weeks now. Fits nicely between the mirror and headliner, and works as good as I had expected. There is a bit of an obstruction on the right side from the mirror base, but I'll live with that in order to have it mounted where it is. Videos and sound are both pretty good quality.

Hard wired it into the fuse box, so it comes on when I start the car and shuts off at the same time as well.

Thanks for the all the info folks.

Are there any units that work without being hardwired into the car - that perhaps function on a battery? Solar would be great too, but I doubt that exists. TIA

I doubt - they consume too much energy.

The K1S uses a go pro battery, but if you do not also plug the recorder into the car it will only run for about 40 minutes. I just hard wired one in and am super happy it's the results.

Edit: this dash cam fails randomly for me.. Was rear ended last month. I pulled the video card out to review and I found several 1 minute gaps in the feed. Of course one of these gaps happened right as a texting snowboarder hit me on the freeway. I had zero video evidence of the collision. I will be ripping this out of the car soon

I misspoke above. I ran the cigarette plug under the center console and plugged it into the armrest.. So it is only on with key on
