Pilot Super Sports...winter tires?

Yup. Still running Pilot Super Sports in freezing and below zero temps. They work well as long as you park overnight in a heated garage, stay off of anything over 1/2" of snow, and don't red light race anyone. I just go to and from work in my E90 right now. So these tires work pretty darned good in low temps. They start suck in snow...don't do that.

I got caught unprepared. I was procrastinating and snow came early. For the most part, its been cold. if it snows, I drive my wife's car which has snow tires.

So PSS can be a winter tire. Kind of.

EDIT: My tires are 1000 miles old.

But the assertion that you'll auto-die if you run PSSs in freezing temps is wrong.

Indeed.
But lets hope the winter tyre police don't find this thread - you will be accused of threatening the very existence of mankind with your reckless disregard for every other road user.

I keep the PSS on the car through NY winter (obviously I don't drive in any amount of snow), and if you drive it like a normal person, I haven't experienced any issues. If you mash the throttle they'll lose grip easily, but it certainly isn't like I'm driving on an oil slick.

Why not just get a beater set of winter wheels with A/S or snow tires? If I lived in Wisconsin, it would be a no brainer.

because bigjae is all about saving money. he is trying to run 17s on his e46 track car to save money on tires.

I think you need to include a disclaimer of some sort in your OP!

PSSs aren't special. If there isn't any snow on the ground you won't die if you drive cautiously.

they have worked fine for me except for one day after work it had snowed about 1-1.5 inches and I made it maybe a half block before I just started spinning my tires and had to leave it at work. As long as there isnt snow and you drive cautiously, youll be fine

Mine were horrendous but they were also pretty worn. I ended up replacing them with Blizzaks for the winter. I'll go back to PSS in the summer for sure though.

Forgot to add that my tires are pretty new...added that to the OP. I'm in not recommending this but you can survive cold temps with PSSs in good shape with some care and occasional warming in a garage. Notice I didn't say snow.

I realize that you are careful to not recommend using PSS in snow but why not get snow tires so that you have traction in all conditions? As you know snow comes unannounced often in WI. I'm all for saving money but what's the point of saving $500 on snow tires / wheels (net cost) on a $70k car when you live in WI? I just don't get it... unless you have a winter car and you just want to get the M3 out for an occasional joy ride in dry conditions.

Honestly, I got caught unprepared and it was a busy time at work. It got cold quick and snowed early. My dependable transportation in snow is an F30 328i with snow tires. I would have had definitely had snows on if I didn't have that. Not to mention I'm in Milwaukee for one winter most likely, I'm living in an apartment and I'm already storing 8 extra tires. I really have no place to put any more tires.

AND...I travel quite a bit so I don't drive it every day. I'll be out of town for most of Feb and Mar.

Makes sense... I grew up on Green Bay and lived in Minneapolis until 2 years ago. I don't miss dealing with snow and cold!

Michelin Pilot Cups are even better in snow. The lack of traction is so great that the spinning of the tires actually creates heat and thus friction.

has anyone been able to drive with decent safety on pss's on just a small amount of snow?i have fairly new ones on oem 19" wheels, and am wondering if people have had success in those conditions.i'm trying to figure out if i need to stay off the road as soon as there's the smallest amount of snow,or if they can cope with a little bit.we don't get enough snow here in nc to justify winter tires, and this is my dd.

I'm sure someone has done it. Someone on earth has done just about every bad idea imaginable and gotten away with it. But no, don't do it, it's really a bad idea.

I'm not going to jump on bigjae's case here, b/c he's clearly not trying to run them in the actual snow. But if there's any snow accumulation on the road, summer tires can be seriously unsafe. And sometimes you just can't get going at all, so it's safe but futile. See blankstar's post above. 1 inch of snow and he only made it 1/2 block.

I would either get some sort of temporary solution for snowy days, like autosock (http://www.autosock.us/) or come up with alternate transportation for snowy days: beater car, carpool, 2wd sidecar motorcycle, taxi, public transportation, etc.

What happens when you move forward a foot and have to melt the snow again?
