Porsche uses 0w40 Mobil 1 for the GT3? Honda uses 5w30 for their multitudes of 8000+ engines as well. Ferrari also specs a 0w40ish weight oil. Not seeing a trend here Mr., quite the opposite and a heavier oil results in more windage losses and that problem gets worse the higher the revs so it'd be less than ideal to spec a heavy oil for a high revving engine unless there was some other consideration besides performance and efficiency.

That is nonsense, Porsche, Ferrari, Audi, Lamborghini, etc all spec a 40W oil for their 8k+ RPM engines. Don't think that the 0W makes the oil thinner at operating temp, the 40W is the number that is important. 0W just refers to the cold temperature flow/viscosity characteristics of the oil.

If you are thinking that the M1 0W40 is thin at operating temperature you would be wrong.... Now if guys were using a 20W oil there would be reason to be concerned. 60W oil in a street car is quite a unique recommendation anyway, I have always doubted the necessity of the TWS since I bought my first 09 M3.

BTW, I have all of the latest approved LL01 oil/vendor list. I just haven't had time to format and post it. I also have the latest oil/engine list. Same situation, I haven't had time to format and post it. One notable thing is S85 is still showing as having separate 0W30 break in oil, then a switch to 10W60 after 2000 KM. This data came straight from the ISTA as of December 2013.

One more irony, it appears that ISTA and TIS may be out of sync with each other. Service bulletins say no special break in oils are required (even for S85), but ISTA says otherwise. I'm still trying to get to the bottom of that.

I must be mistaken. I had thought a lot of people talk about higher weights as race oil. If you look at different brands their heaviest oils often. Ate race pi but that's why I asked so my mistake.

I believe several Ferrari's spec 10W-60 oil...the Enzo, the 360 Modena Challenge, the 599, the 308 and the 328.
As well as a few Maserati, the odd Lotus, Aston and a Lambo.

It's not LL01 approved, but I would consider the M1 5w-50 as well. It carries Porsche A40 and is the Lexus LFA factory fill.

Here's the latest BMW oil recommendations per engine. This data was downloaded from BMW ISTA program, database: December 2013. This is about as recent as it gets. I omitted diesel engine oils from the list.

The S65/S85 conundrum still exists. The S85 recommends LL-04 light weight break in oil for the first 2000 Km, but the S65 has no such recommendation.

Just curious if the tighter clearances are on M-cars only?

If there is a difference, why?
