Talking Off-roading through the Cyclone at Thunderhill

I was at Thunderhill for the 4th of July. I did a 2-day HPDE with BMWCCA almost a year ago so this was my 3rd time at this track. Aside from being almost a year, this was the first time I have driven through the cyclone as last year we just used the by-pass to the left of it. Anyways, I was completely caught off guard on the first lap of my first session and I'm sure a lot of people got a good laugh from it. Enjoy.

Great video! Loved the editing and captions you put in!

T5 does require a bit less entry speed than that one time...

2:11 is not bad. The fastest I managed was a 2:09.4 over the top of T5 in my previous Evo. I haven't gone anywhere close in the M3 yet.

I went off at Thunderhill before too. The drop away in elevation got me.

I think I've seen that video before. I wish I could go to Thunderhill more often, but it's just too far. About 3 hours away when I can get to Laguna or Infineon in about 1.5. And I'm probably not alone on this but I have this problem where I just can't get much sleep the night before a track event.

Thunderhill and Laguna Seca are the same driving time for me.. about 2.5 hour drive each way. Infineon is the closest. I lived in Sacramento for a a long time so I consider Thunderhill my "home course" and have been going there for over 10 years. I've instructed there quite a few times in the past as well. The grassy run offs are nice so you don't end up in a wall like Laguna and Infineon.

I'm sure you could have made the off road line faster than the tarmac line if you had just kept your foot in it
The cyclone dropoff is even worse when run in the other direction.

Very nice! I was there with you at the BMWCCA event a year ago. I think a couple people said that the bypass configuration was more difficult than the cyclone. Maybe because it sort of baits you into cresting the hill too fast into a down-hill off-camber turn. The elevation changes on on this track is pretty wicked.

Good recovery--looks like if you hadn't corrected to the left after you went off, the steering would have carried you more to the right, up the hill, possibly causing a roll...

Meh...I was expecting some 360s and maybe a launch. But you kept things in control, nice save and driving!

Is that track in the desert or something? Everything is brown in every video I've seen. And it looks like a lot of fun!

Not in the desert, but out in the middle of nowhere (farmland).
