Cool M3 Meet-up at Austin Formula-1

The weekend tickets and parking passes have just arrived!

So....Does anyone know if there will be an official or semi-official BMW or ///M3 meet-up at next month's Formula One race in Austin at Circuit of the Americas?

If not, then let's get interested people on-line here and coordinate a Saturday afternoon get-together!

Thankfully, we have a shiny new, super-fast route to get there -- courtesy of the new Toll 130 Speedway (my term, hehe) see picture.

It's going to be a blast!

Extended family lives in Austin -- rent-free ! ! ! ! !

However, I plan to drive on 130 next Wednesday anyhow... just need to make sure that the private contractor did a suitable job of construction. You know, I'm sacrificing my time and gasoline to the betterment of the road-driving public.

I'm going to alter my normal route to Houston for Driver's Edge just so I can take this new road. I might have been already doing 105 on the cruise control on the old section of 130.

I'll be there. Staying with extended family as well, but would try to meet up if there's a gathering planned. Btw, I will be instructing at the upcoming MSR Cresson Apex Driving Academy the Saturday before the F1 weekend if you want to really get into the spirit .

Great! Seems like there is enough interest!

I'll be there on Friday and will scout-out locations for a meeting on either Saturday or Sunday (not too-close to the actual race, though!) and will share it on-line here. If you set this thread's subscription updates to immediate, then it will get sent out to your smart phone or computer.

Hey VMC,

First post, but read the forums a lot.. Excited about the F1 too.

I'm actually doing a fun run on the track tomorrow morning-it's 1 lap around/ 3.4 miles. should be excellent. Is anyone else running? It's called the Formula run.
Was thinking about wearing my go pro on my chest to film the track.lol

Less than two weeks from the actual event, and they do not have a published schedule -- that's quite lame.

I'll need to see a schedule to better plan our meet-up. So please bear with it a bit longer.

Lol...aren't they still building facilities out there? I think this first race will be absolute chaos topped with confusion.

Formula Run traffic

Wow,
So there were only 3000 people that signed up for this fun run.
I stayed the night in Bastrop and took 812 N to the track. The rest that came from Austin- 2,999 -LOL.. said that 130 toll road was a disaster. It took some 40 min. just to exit and get into the track. They then delayed the run by30 min so that people could get in. What a nightmare for just 3000 people.
From what i can tell, there is only 1 entrance into the track. I could be wrong about that?-- and it's just a 1-way road in (812). So how the heck are 150K people all going to feed into the facility with just 1 entrance?
BTW, the elevation changes on this track are crazy.
V -- at the M day a few weeks ago, I believe you said you're in turn 11; that looks like a great spot. You can see cars coming at you and then make the turn down and away from you.
Construction update: They are still doing lots of construction/installing seats/planting bushes.

The track is kind of in the middle of nowhere. What will compound that is TX-130 doesn't have a ton of exits so the few exits within that vicinity will be packed.

Probably should do a 4x4 and just off road there...this is Texas ain't it y'all? Or stop being such a cheap skate and rent a helicopter.

I'll be driving in Friday, but I have a parking spot in the F lot already. Will be quite drunk on Saturday and Sunday, so I've obviously found another means of transport to the circuit.

Thanks for the info/report on the Formula Run...It may have been a good mini-test for the track officials to practice for the car race weekend. 3,000 people -- I didn't even know about the Run until you posted it -- and in the last few days I have found several people that did not believe me when I told them about the Circuit of the Americas -- they have heard/read NOTHING. COTA should be advertising at Houston Texan games, Dallas Cowboys, at pubs and bars, etc. Just seems that they're missing an entire Public Relations opportunity to get awareness out there.

Anyhow, thanks especially for the Turn Eleven news. Maybe I'll have to bring my own chair!

- V

I was wondering if it would be possible to tether four A.R. Drones together and ride on them....?

V-They musta done a good enough job of promoting as I just went on the COTA website and every seat including general admission is sold out. They are trying to sell these ultra high $$ packages but i don't count those for us average joes.

Agreed that we need some details but this is from the F1 web site:

Practice 1 Fri 09:00
Practice 2 Fri 13:00
Practice 3 Sat 09:00
Qualifying Sat 12:00
Race Sun 13:00

Doesn't say anything about the vintage race date or time so we'll have to wait on that too.

My son was at the Australian GP this spring and they had a host of other races that weekend including V8 Supercars. Hopefully everything will be better next year.

Yup, I was one of those saps stuck on 130 for 45 minutes waiting to turn onto 812 for the Formula Run. Barely got there in time. I live about 20 minutes from the track and it took me an hour and fifteen minutes to get there. Traffic on race weekend is going to be a NIGHTMARE.

I'm amazed at how much they accomplished since I was there a couple of months ago. Still a long way to go, though. Had a great run around the track. Going to be a fun memory on race day.

I like the tower, looks like a cobra ready to strike.

Can't wait for the race. Been learning the track on F1 2012, it's super fun. Think the drivers are going to love it.

With Vettel needing only 15 points and Red Bull needing 5, there's a very real possibility that both Driver's and Constructor's Championships will be won at our inaugural race. Pretty sweet.
