996 turbo vs M3.
Well I've asked this question before and have searched for videos of a STOCK 996 turbo vs 08 M3 spd and no answer to the question of speeds around 60 and up, I know that off the line the Porsche will distroy me 11.7 quarter mile. So I had no choice but to finally see for myself what the outcome would be at those speeds. My cousin has a 2002 996TT awd and is always talking yap I have driven his car but felt at speeds above 80mph it lost that pull it has at lower speeds; I also felt that my M3 with just pulley, intake and suspension was just as fast at speed above 70 and up.
So what did I do called him out and went for a race (closed road with no traffic) he decides to tell me to go in front of him feeling that he would pull me in and spit me out (he also decided to bring a passenger to embarass me), first race from about 70mph I got the jump and ran up to 167mph and was in front of him by about four cars. second run from about 80mph up to 170mph with him glued to my rear bumper this time, we pulled and I was still in the lead by about three cars. Lets just say he was highly surprised by the outcome and yes he is an excellent driver as well as myself. His car only has about 45,000 miles on it with a brand new clutch. We are planning on doing another run and will post a video. I also wanted to see the run before I go catless with a tune. I know modded his car will distroy me at all speeds. But I will take this win until then. Last edited by AlteredBe4st; 11-16-2011 at 12:48 PM.. |

Interesting. Both cars have same sort of power, but porsche is a lot more aerodynamic (what matters at high speed), and due to turbo I bet it has higher hp under the curve. I'm surprised he didn't win.

I believe it has better torque due to the twins. I also believe the all wheel drive and possible gearing had a factor at higher speeds just my observation.

I was torn between a used 996TT and a used E90M3. Prices were comparable, depending on the years of each. Bought the M3 since it had a warranty, but would like a 996TT or 997TT down the road when I can afford repairs and mods.

not to jack thread but what about the 996 GT3. In a straight line on the youtube vids by m5board the m3 pulls quite a bit on the GT3 from 40mph and up. Any real life experience with this car?

you summed some of it up yourself. the stock 996 turbo (please don't refer to them as TTs; these aren't some Audi, jk) had extra weight (a passenger who I'd guess at 150-200 lbs) 45,000 hardish miles (he talks trash and raced like this so I assume it's been throttled for most of these miles) against your, mildly tuned, fresh engine. I still would have expected the turbo to reel you in some. the numbers grossly favor the turbo over the M. something seems a little amiss. regardless, nice run.

that's because Gustav will show you how any M car will beat anything. i would be surprised at this as the gt3 weighs in about 450 lbs less but only gives up roughly 33 hp. the torque curve is better on the M but peak torque is very similar.

yes, well over 100 lb/ft of torque from the turbos. 996 generation cars do not have an AWD system as efficient as today's product. Porsche is also notorious for gearing these cars very tall. but, again, nice run.

996 Turbo is faster than E92 M3, straight line or track

That's non-sense. Most of us here know the point of our Porsches and BMWs. To crack off one hot car against another is, well.. just fun, on occasion, imo. that doesn't mean we don't have fun in the corners. That's me, but wailing on the GT3 in a straight line can be boat loads of fun.

Dude can't drive or something is wrong with his car. My 996TT beats my E92M all day. Completely different types of cars and they are both great in their own respect.
