Load of crap or legit?

So I have a minor scuff on the bottom of one of my CF bumper splitters. Hit a low dip leaving a driveway at a friends place and *scrape*

Anyway, you can't tell anything happened unless you lay on the ground and look up at it, but of course I know it's there and want it fixed

Went to the stealership and they recommended a body shop down the road that does good work. Drove in there and saw lots of BMW's, Benz's, and quite a few Porche cars!

The guys there told me that with the CF parts, they can't help me. Need to order a replacement, the adhesive kit, the works. Quoted me at $399 for the part, $25 for the kit, 1.5 hours labor, etc... Total is over $500. Even the guy who looked at it for me said, "I'd just drive with it, that's too expensive to fix something you can't even see."

First off, can a body shop actually repair this? When I look at it, it seems that the CF part itself isn't damaged, and it's just the coating over it that is scraped.

Also, I wonder if any of the vendors here sell just ONE of the OEM Competition splitters. I can probably get it a lot cheaper that way...

Thanks!

They're gonna scrape at some point no matter how careful you are. I say live with it.

I've never heard of a "kit" to fix carbon fiber. You can get some resin and put over the carbon if the carbon itself isn't damaged and then sand and re-clear. 9 times out of 10 though, you will probably be able to tell a repair was done.

thats why any front add-ons should be bought used. rather save half the price for something that will get damaged eventually and switch to other add-ons w/out losing too much money.

drive with it, or have it all replaced! If you buy just one side, they will be unmatched to a certain degree, and that will still bother you!

Its like painting just a fender...you will always be able to tell its been repainted if the rest of the car is original!

Thanks guys, I figure I'll just deal with it. Just my OCD kicking in anyway, because I'll always know it's there even though no one can see it.

@Eric, how could the CF pieces be unmatched though? I thought it was just the CF with a layer of some clear resin and a clearcoat on it? I could be wrong, just curious.

Do you have any pics of the damage? From what it sounds like, the carbon weave isn't damaged. Possibly just sanding and re-clearing would fix it. And since there is no color-match to mess up, I doubt anyone could tell it was resprayed.

Of course, I'm only guessing since I can't see the actual damage.

One might have more rock chips, older clear coat could not be as clear... there's a lot of things...

Have you thought about applying the clear lacquer that comes with the touch-up kit from BMW? that's what I do on my front lip whenever I scrape it on the bottom...

Haven't thought about that, sounds like a good idea though.

I'll snap some pics of it this afternoon and post them up.
