I live in one. Just don't put it on. They only issue a ticket if you get pulled over for something else. i.e.. speeding, running red light etc.

There are a lot of cars here that don't have them, but that doesn't mean not having one is legal. It's usually just a fix it ticket, but I put one on just because I don't need a reason to get pulled over.

Backing in is fine, but I consider myself pretty lucky if I can find a parking spot with just one side protected. No reason to get greedy other than douche-baggery.

I have actually paid close attention to the back in parking and it seems
to be more prevalent and "normal" on the east coast...
I very seldom saw the back first parking habits in California but here in DC
it's everywhere.
I got a gash o my old 328i from a very old lady backing in her Crown
Victoria next to my car...

Just check your fellow member location and a pattern is formed...
coincidence???

I never understood the appeal of having the front plate off to the side like this. It looks hideous. Either run with no plate or mount it properly in the center with a nice M3 plate frame. I get that a front plate doesn't do wonders for the looks of the car, but this is the worst option, IMO.

Sorry but it's not the worst option if you want to avoid drilling holes into your bumper to mount a plate in the middle.

If I recall this plate is mounted by using the existing tow hook hole so no drilling etc and you can to back to a prisitine front bumper by unscrewing the assembly and just poping the little cover back in.

I always back up into parking spaces because its easier to leave when you get back. I don't think it's douchebaggy... But parking in the middle and huge MFEST stickers definitely is.

It's not for looks, but to avoid putting holes in the front bumper. If I had to, I'd probably go this route.

+1 completely agree. the non-centered plate reminds of the "tuner" evo/wrx/rice burner crowd. Keep it classy M3 owners

While I understand the logic for avoiding the drilling of the bumper, when I see any vehicle with an off-center front plate I find myself checking the driver's head gear for ballcap symmetry with the plate.

lol..the baseball cap assymetry and the cap on backwards look are THE signs of douchebaggery. Lots of "because racecar bro" civic/eclipse/hyundai kids love the look. M3 owners driving > $60K cars deserve better.

I guess I am old school, but lots of kids are 'gifted' their cars by parents and thus don't appreciate the car that they didn't have to work hard for with their money and now you have this problem.

Okay...so in order to avoid drilling holes in your bumper (which won't show since you have a plate mounted) you mount your plate off to the side like this which looks hideous. Like I said, it looks best with no plate, but if you need to have a front plate, why not just mount it properly so it looks as good as possible.

This is like saying you want rear spoiler, but you don't want to get adhesive on the trunk so you decide to mount the spoiler at the base of the rear window instead. You won't have damaged the paint finish of you car (under the spoiler), but it will look hideous.

The only logical argument for this side mount thing is if you have built a real dedicated show car and you need to frequently keep taking the plate on and off for car shows.

In San Francisco the fucking meter maids will give you a ticket if you're parked on the street without a front plate, sometimes even if you don't get a ticket for anything else.

I've gotten 3 so far. Like $120 each. They're fixit tickets so I just keep my plate on my towhook mount in the trunk, pop it on, get signed off, pop it back off.

Completely agree. The side plate is much more visually disruptive than a regular centered plate in a decent holder. Using the tow hook mount also draws attention to the car in a negative way since it looks abnormal.

There is also no need to drill holes in the bumper; spend some money on high quality double sided tape.
