Just like Minnesota in Pennsylvania

Sun's out with no wind and no humidity. Reminds me of two winters in Minnesota. I love this weather, but Im not so sure if the car does.

10W-60 Castrol TWS may be no match for these temps. I'd feel a lot better if BMW would allow us to use 0W-30 or 5W-40 in the winter. I have to leave the car out for 8 hours in this. My E46 M3 used to make terrible sounds if I left it out in these kinds of temps.

You guys up north who dd your S65s, do you keep the 10W-60 in the crankcase all winter?

In Minnesota here, and we were well below that last week, closer to -20. M3 did fine. Moaned a bit at first, but drove fine and started fine.

I'm inclined to think that although it can get cold in Germany BMW designs their vehicles to run in Sweden and Norway...both major markets of theirs and both of which lie, partially, above the Arctic Circle.

With God as my judge...I spent last Friday night in a town called Val d'Or,Quebec and took this picture just after starting my journey home on Saturday morning. The amazing thing is that Saturday night/Sunday morning was predicted to be even colder there and I checked weather.com yesterday morning and found that it was -35F!

HaHa ... -31 degrees ... ding, ding, ding ... we have a winner.

I had a few days in Minnesota where the car (an Audi RS6, cuz the M3 stayed in the heated garage on really cold days) would freak out because of the cold. Car would go into limp mode with series of faults. Restart it a couple of times after driving a mile or two and it would start behaving again.

The doors in my RS6 used to rattle a bit in sub-zero conditions.

From what little I could see life went on like normal at those temps. There were a few cars on the road "downtown" and people seemed to be out and about. What really stunned me was that when I checked in I already knew the forcast and asked detailed questions regarding whether or not we'd have enough heat."Everything will be fine" was basically how they answered each of my questions.Well,I woke up to find they were right. My room was toasty warm just like on a summer morning. Those Canucks really know how to design heating systems!!

In my case the car ran just fine after about 30 minutes. At first the thing sounded (and felt) like a bulldozer...but that didn't surprise me.I knew that diesels make a hell of a racket when started in really cold weather. Also,at first the tires felt like they were a hard as bricks....although I suppose it could have been the shocks rather than the tires.

Like I said...after 30 minutes everything seemed perfectly normal.

Why would you choose to live in a place that cold? Is it a genetic thing that if you're born somewhere you need to stay there no matter how ridiculously cold?

I live in a cold place because 1)my family and friends are all here 2)it's always been "home" and "home" is very important to me.However,I'd be lying if I said you can never find me in a place that has palm trees...particularly in January and/or February.
