Both,... but I have been around car forums a while so I'm not shocked.

The way I look at it is there three stages to car forum/ownership experience. You just have to know your level in the food chain. The early adopters worry less about maintenance diy stuff but cosmetic ones.

Mid-stage adopters, on the other hand usually second third owners are the ones who really give the diy section a life of it's own, both cosmetic but usually non-cosmetic. That's where most of us come in. That's where the word "search" comes alive. This is how we become a problem: not searching.

Then you have the late-bloomers - these are the ones SebringJetta is referring to. These are ones that take what the mid-stage adopters started to a whole new level.

I don't think the new F8x makes the e9x look that out dated imo

If anything, the sleekness and cohesive design of the E9X M's makes the new cars look even uglier.

I would hope to be a mid stager, lol. I'm the second owner and hoping I can learn as well as contribute to the community even though the next generation is on the horizon.

I wish there were a better word than "raw" to describe that you guys are trying to describe.

Raw means uncooked, unprocessed, not finished, not polished, marked by absence of refinement, having the surface chafed, etc.

Maybe spartan wouuld be a better word vs an E90/92. uninsulated, go-kart-like, connected, direct, etc.

Agreed! Every time I see a f8x I'm so happy I have the sleek and flowing e92. The new cars are ugly inside and out, sound like crap, and the performance numbers are still unknown so hopefully it's a home run in that category.

Well the e9x is a better car, i think your problem is you went to a e90, if you would have went with an e92 you probably would have liked it more.

For a few months I had my E46 M3 and my E90 M3 and it was great to drive them back to back. It actually made me appreciate each one more. The E90 is a great solution to having an M3 and a family, but I do miss the direct feel of the E46. It was much more connected to the road, the steering isn't as weighted, but it feels more precise. On the other hand, driving the 6sp E46 in traffic was not fun, and the E90 DCT is an awesome compromise for a daily.

I did have a E36 M3 4door and a 1972 2002, both of which I should have kept. The E30 M3 has always been on my dream list, although I've never driven one.

Care to explain? As far as I know both the E90 and E92 are identical, except for the coupe's lack of doors. Are you saying the lack of doors alters the driving experience?

As for the E46, I would much rather have a 370z instead. It has very similar performance and driving feel to it, but with better styling (subjective) and none of the maintenance headaches of the E46 M3.

I think the word you're looking for is "raw".

... (of an emotion or quality) strong and undisguised.
"he exuded an air of raw, vibrant masculinity"
synonyms: strong, intense, passionate, fervent, powerful, violent.

OP, you got the point right there.

Dont get me wrong, E46 and E9x M3 are great cars with their own taste.
E36 US version was reasonably sad with a different engine without ITB.

E46 is "called" to be "like the best" because it has been very affordable to many crowds.
Whether on forum or off forum, it's kinda sad to see more than 50% of people who call E46 M3s "BEST" have never tracked the vehicle, probably put fat 19 VMR or BBS LM replica wheels and be all stancenation lol

I didn't own E46 M3 but I drove many E46s including M3. "raw" feeling? really? honestly? No.... probably "raw" because of noise.

Go drive the E9x and see its responsive combination of engine+tranny. The E9X M3 is superior in both criteria than those of E46.
The S65 is V8 while being actually lighter than inline-6 of E46, it's got the best transmission both ways (DCT + 6MT). so far after 7yrs did not cause any major frame/subframe damage like E46 did. Worst of all, E46 SMG tranny was somply pathetic, one thing that KILLED the character of E46.

it's those factors, along with personal taste that make cars "special". For example, 991 GT3 will be a GREAT car. but 997.5 GT3 4.0rs will be a CLASSIC, especially with its lmited production and most importantly last 6MT GT3 model ever produced.

It's hard to call what is "all time classic",It really is upto one's taste, the way they drive the car and the way they enjoy/maintain their vehicles.

But if we are doing an unbiased, factual car to car comparo, E9X eats E46.....easily...both in numbers and character
