1200 Mile Service

Does the 1,200 mile service still require the transmission and differential fluid to be changed for a 6MT? I brought it in for the service and mentioned that per the manual it should be done but my SA said that BMW changed this policy last month. I even mentioned the SIB mentioned in the sticky post but he said that is outdated. Can anyone confirm? Thanks.

I had mine done 11 days ago and they *attempted* a trans/diff fluid change.

I'd be interested if they changed the policy, but I doubt it. In retrospect I sure wish they had not touched mine. Can't imagine the fluid really needs changing for at least a year or 15-25k miles based on my experience with other high performance and race cars, so I sure wouldn't sweat it if they don't want to change it. Just my 2 cents.

Sounds like I am lucky that they didn't do it. Sorry to hear about your situation, I hope your car ends up ok.

I just got mine done two days ago, and on the invoice only 9 qts of oil and the oil filter were listed...no sign of the tranny fluid, nor the differential fluid....I wonder if they changed the fluids.

The dealer had my car for 7 hours though...

I reached out to BMWNA and they confirmed that the trans and diff fluids should have been changed. They contacted the dealer and instructed them to change the fluids which they have done. It's nice to have this issue resolved.

You know it's really kinda' mind boggling that BMW demands that you complete the 1200 mile service, but so many dealers are clueless to the requiremnts of the service. Thank God some of us know what the car really needs.

I take mine in next Friday and my understanding is Engine oil. DCT is life time fluid. Not sure about the diff.

If the dealer had your car for 7 hours, they were updating ECU software.

So are we in agreement on this?

DCT: Engine Oil/Diff Oil
6MT: Engine Oil/Diff Oil/Trans Oil

Yep . And preferably with the 'good' diff oil, which doesn't cause chatter on tight turns, but most dealers use the cheap one. I'll change it with the good one myself soon.

Do a search for the part number. And yes, Tischer definitely carries it; just ask Evan for the one with the additive. Order 2 liters... or 3 if you want to have enough for 2 changes . I much prefer to put the right stuff than adding an additive BMW doesn't approve (BMW doesn't recommend any additives). Differential just takes about 1.25L, it's not going to break the bank.

getBMWparts.com - part number - 83 22 2 282 583. $50 or so. I will ask my dealer to use that oil and see if they can charge me for the difference in price.
