1M..... 'Ugly as Sin'
I hear this comment from many members whenever the any discussion of the 1M comes up. I do have to admit, it's not the 'best' looking car out there, but I do like some of the aggressive qualities that BMW designers have incorporated into the 1M that were lacking in the regular 1 series. I tried to understand the extreme dislike for the 1M. What specifically was lacking design-wise? Headlights? Bumpers? Overall size? Proportions? I even started a thread that was promptly shut down because the mods were trying to avoid the direction the thread might end up going with a M3 vs. 1M flame fest. (http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=551008)
So I kept thinking about what the 1M would have looked like if I were designing it. I posted this over on 1Addicts.com but am curious if this would have been a better design approach than the 1series coupe? What do you get when you cross an E36Z3 Mcoupe, a E82 Mcoupe and an E81/F20? I kinda envisioned something like the original Mcoupe but with 4seats. What do you guys think?

The headlights and small frame concept are the 2 things that bug me the most.
The headlights take away from any aggressive appeal the car may have. The shape and size reminds me too much of a miata. How did the s2000 remain such a good looking car for its size? Aero styling... Your pic looks good!! |

I like what you did there. I was one of the 7 people that liked that little M Coupe/mini hearse. I like your version better than the current one. Well done!

In pictures it looks really good. Was a little underwhelmed in person, but I wouldn't call it ugly.
Borrowed this pic....actually looks better than some of the M3s from the thread I took it from. http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=568037 |

OP, could you add a power dom? Take the hatchback down, change the engine to a bigger one, say V8 NA. May be move the redline to somewhere beyond 8300, say 8400. Give it wider tires. While at it, throw some horse power too, get it up to above 400, make it a sexy number say 414. Man, that would be an AWESOME car. Just please when you put the emblem on the back, please put the M first before the number.

I think the 1M looks great. That hatch render is also fantastic.

What I love most about the 1M design are the rear hips. The fenders just look wide as hell.
But I am lucky enough to get a ride in one quite often, and I can tell you the fun factor in driving the car really adds to the design. It all makes sense, IMO. Hard to decide sometimes... but I still love my 4 doors.

You can see how absurdly wide everything looks on the 1M. That front fender is outrageous, and looks so good IRL too.
I think the smaller size of the 1 is what makes the fenders stand out so much. The thing is, when I was deciding on an M3 I wrote off the E92 because of a specific design factor that I didn't like with it. The E92 didn't seem proportional in that the car (from a profile) looked like it was cut up in 1/4 (the front), 1/3 (the HUGE door), and 2/3 for the rear.. Where when you look at an E90 sedan, everything looks cut up properly. Front, Door, Door, Rear all in 1/4's. The 1M looks PERFECT as a coupe, especially with the widebody where everything is cut up perfectly into 1/3's. At least that's how I see it..

To each his own I guess, but IMHO the 1M is a sexy ass car! Performs very well too.
That will probably be my next car if I have enough funds saved... Not VO or BSM but in AW please. spiff, Just like biglare, you have the best of both worlds. V8 and forced induction. Both BMW's too! |
