It's electric!

Just saw this at our local diner yesterday--a new Jag? A baby brother to the Aston Martin Rapide? Nope. It's the new Tesla Model S. Gorgeous. I've seen it in the car mags, but never in person.

Put a 500hp V8 in this, and I'd be all over it!

Dude! Why would you want a 500hp V8 in this as it can already out-accelerate (and quite possibly out-handle)a F10 M5

I see them constantly. There's a Tesla dealer a few blocks from the house. Car looks great in person, will see how they hold up though.

Just saw one this weekend and it really stood out, looks great. Agree about the comment to see how they hold up. Still can't see paying ~$100k for one though...

They are extremely bad for the environment! Every Li Ion or Li-poly batteries (Ni Mh as well) are made with huge toxic waste and pollution. Just the Li mining process involves several steps of acid extractions which waste goes where?? Some of these step are allowed only in china on an industrial scale.
Please, DO NOT by any hybrid vehicle if you care for your environment!!
CO2 is not nearly as disastrous than the toxic waste associated with battery making!

I suspect you're completely correct. Good luck trying to get Obama and the New York Times/Washington Post/MSNBC to understand this or even care, though.

The main problem is regarding hybrids is the focus on CO2 emission and not overall pollution. I do not debate the greenhouse effect of CO2 and the man-made climate changes.
The current battery technology is not the answer at all. It is very toxic to make and to dismantle. There is no real recycle for Li based batteries yet.
Our M3 cost the environment way less overall than a Prius.

You're kidding, right? A Tesla S won't outperform an M5.

It's darn close to the same quickness as an M5. "Performing" is something 20 different people would define differently...

Tesla Model S Performance 0-60 in 3.9 seconds

F10 M5 0-60 4.1 seconds

We have a Tesla dealership in my local mall, but if you ask for a test drive, it requires a $5000 deposit.

My friends dad has one.
1. It is a very good looking car. I love the wide stance, sleek lines, performance-luxury look.
2. It is a techno nerd's paradise. My mother would hate it and honestly the screen is probably the most distracting thing I've ever seen. That being said it does everything a car should do.
3. The torque is awesome. My head was pinned back as if a '500 hp v8' was pinning it. Puts a smile on your face. Especially for those who never know track time, torque and the 0-60 times are very fun.
4. The batteries are like computer batteries, just lots of them. Yes terrible, still different batteries than the Prius I thought.
5. Made in America, tax returns and HOV lane
6. Expensive. No gas, but the car is damn expensive. Would all the 7 series drivers pay 100k for a car like this that gets 18mpg? Yes. So why not get 108mpg or whatever it is. My friends dad has an electric consumption monitor on his home and it has made very little different in his bill.
7. It's a great car. It's fun, exciting, new and different. Luxurious but awesome. The rear seats are awesome and not having a transmission tunnel means its a truly comfortable 5 seater.
8. Is it a track car? No. But either is the new m5 or m6 (flame on fan boys)

I would love to have one someday, TESLA is well on its way to being "established" as a major car manufacturer at the level of the big boys. I might have to buy this stock soon.

I've seen more and more of them in the last week or so and have to say they look great. Still can't see dropping $100k on one and I still have worries about the safety of the lithium ion batteries, let alone the long term environmental damage. But kudos to Musk and team (and our gov't, lol) for getting it up and running.

I am thinking the same thing. This is my FAVORITE car at this time. I would love to have one.

Great technology, great ideas, a startup company, zero emissions, zero gasoline.

Fast, stunning to look at, and rare. What more could I ask for?

The Tesla S is NOT faster than an M5. It may have a slight advantage off the line, but that is about it.

The test that everyone talks about is bogus in my eyes. The Tesla driver jumped the start pretty noticeably, and the M5 driver launched like there was a cop next to him (okay I exaggerate a bit here, but the launch was clearly not a best effort). Also, if you really pay attention, the M5 driver granny shifted as well. IMO, they used a manual M5 because there is no way to sandbag a run in a DCT M5 without clearly letting off the throttle.

They also conveniently used an engineered test finish speed of 100mph, because there would be no way they could find a way to show the Tesla winning in a traditional quater mile. The M5 would just suck the doors of the Tesla in such a contest, and there would be no way to hide that.

These are obviously my opinions, but c'mon, the M5s are capable of 11 second quarter miles at over 120 mph, and the Tesla is nowhere near that universe.

Like I said, it was an engineered test, using all Tesla-vested-interest participants, with all parameters constrained to the Tesla's advantage.

If I owned the M5, there would be zero chance that Tesla would win, even if race was constrained to 100mph. I would be in it to win in my M5 (dct, of course), and that Tesla would be sucking on the fumes from my climate-altering, Polar-bear downing M5.

I could run that same test and convince most viewers that a stock VW GTI is faster than an M3, but those with a brain would see right through it (provided they were not blinded by subconscious political ideology like many are for an electric car).

Witch all that said. I feel the Tesla S is the best of breed for current electric cars, and is one of the best looking sedans I've laid eyes on.

+1

Mass production of batteries is destroying the environment. On the small scale, it is not as bad but the big massive batteries that are needed for hybrid and electric cars are really destroying the environment.

I'm not seeing it. Even the overly generous Car and Driver has its 0-60 at 4.6 seconds and its 1/4 mile in 13.3 seconds @ 104. Those are E46 M3 numbers not F10 M5 ones.
