Dinan exhaust booming???

Hi Guys,

I have recently purchased an M3 and wanted to get a better sound of the car.
Got the rear Dinan exhaust installed at the dealer.
Now the exahust is not horribly loud, but there is some sort of booming sensation around 3000 rpm.

From my research Dinan rear section was supposed to fairly mild.
Any ideas if the booming is normal, should it go away after some time or there is some-thing wrong with the exhaust or installation?

Thanks in advance and please no jokes about the noise

Is the exhaust brand new? I really dont remember what it was like when I first got mine over a year ago or the new exhaust on my previous M3, I certainly dont remember it "booming". Perhaps it just needs to be broken in and the car needs to adapt.

I have had the full exhaust set up from day one and dont fint it that loud in the cabin or getting a booming sensation. I know everyone is different, but the Dinan set up seems to be considered a low drone option.

Drive it around and hopefully it will settle for you (or at least you will get used to it!) I personally love mine.

The exhaust is brand new. I am hoping it gets better with time
If not I will take it for inspection. My main concern is the headache and that low frequency noise in my ears after driving...

Break in?

You didn't say how long you've been driving it, but I had a similiar drone experience with my Eisenamnn Race exhaust for the first 1000 miles or so after installation. It got better after that. The drone peaks right around 3,000 rpm still. I solve for it by shifting up or down to avoid the 3k mark when crusing.

I never noticed what you are calling booming.....but I've had the exhaust since day 1 and it's been fairly tamed. Even after I added the x-pipe I still think it's tame under "normal" cruising conditions..............Phil

If there is any exhaust that is supposed to make less noise inside the cabin, it's definitely the Dinan

Wonder how much of the exhaust breaking in is actually just ears breaking.

Exhaust should be louder over time, not quieter.

This is called drone. Every exhaust has drone. The ones that say you have to break it in simply got used to the drone and break-in does nothing for drone. Drone is a resonance issue and it is impossible for this to change with break-in

Either have to drive at higher rpms or low to avoid the drone zone

Is it installed right? An exhaust leak would bring all sorts of bad resonance into the cabin.

Would not that be more of a whistling sound in that case?

An exhaust leak would be pretty obvious from outside the car. It usually results in a splattering type of exhaust sound, not drone or booming.
