Where does it say N52 will be obsolete? from what I can see it sais the inline 6 on CERTAIN models will be replaced with the I4 turbo engine. as following:

E89 Z4 sDrive30i
F10/F11 528i
F25 X3 xDrive28i
E81/E87

Someone correct me if i'm being a spaz here.

Those models are just for now.

Once the F20 launches, this engine will likely power the highest trim (today's 130i) and the F30 will also launch with this engine powering the 328i. So essentially 28i every car that is currently powered by a N52 will switch over to this engine.

Well I truly do believe these engines will be better in every respect or I truly believe bmw would not have taken this leap. However you just cannot help be sad to see the end of the bmw Inline 6! I mean how many famous bmw's had an inline 6 engine, so many car magazine raves and so many years refining their trademark. Really a sad day, however in the end I do believe both bmw and M division will perfect these turbo applications where we will not be able to tell the difference between an NA and these but will have more power, torque, efficiency and at a lower cost. That is the great thing about technology

For the coupe and convertible, I would look for an HO 2L turbo I4 with somewhere around 285hp, and a 1M (or M2, perhaps) with a 350hp+ turbo I4, perhaps with displacement bumped to 2.2L or so.

Absolutely! I just want to highlight the FUD. If there are no I6 engines for the new 1 series the engine bay can be shorter by about 8 inches. That space can be reallocated to the rear seat and boot. I have no doubt that BMW will get it right. My N55 135i is a blast to drive. It is not my first turbocharged car, but it is my first piston engine turbo. Years ago I owned a single turbo RX7 rotary. Rated HP was only 180, but it was fast because it only weighed about 2700 pounds. It did not even have power steering.

My 135i goes 65 to 105 mph about as quick as the RX7 could do 65 to 90 mph. I really like the growl that the N55 makes. The 135i is as quick as my 1992 6 Sped LT1 Corvette, but the 135i does it's thing with much less drama. In inflation adjusted dollars, the 135i cost less.

Interesting point about the 8-inch smaller engine bay. Are you sure about that fact? If that's the case, since the next-gen 1er is a few inches bigger than the current one, it will likely mean about 10-inches increase in passenger and cargo space which is fantastic. I doubt we'd see 6-cylinder engines in the F20 line (including coupe/cab). The M2 is rumoured to get a 4-cyl, so it's unlikely there will be a 135i with a 6-cyl.

Is the BMW Turbo4 direct injected ? I hope it doesn't suffer from the carbon buildup problems that the VW 2.0T suffers from.

F20 and F30 are based on the same platform, so I don't think they can design the F20 for I-4 engine only. Both can take I-6 engines in my opinion.

Even if they make it I-4 only they can't pull the engine all the way forward because the weight distribution won't be ideal.

I am curious how they will battle with the carbon build up in these DI motors.

Actually, it was a pretty good engine but it really woke up after I tore off the charcoal filter. The non-economy N52 was significantly better.

Does this engine change lead to reduced MSRPs?

Yeah Right! Since when did BMW lower prices? If they were going to lower the price these would've named X25i's

I'd keep that car for life. "it's the last of the (NA) v8 interceptors". Makes me regret getting the d....

To all you turbo lovers... A Turbo engine will never match the throttle response of a NA engine with 8 individual throttle bodies

Its odd to say but BMW has completed its life circle 360 degrees. They started with 4 cylinders in the 2002s and first 3 series, and now look where they have ended up.

I read that BMW will only have engines with cylinders with 0.5l displacement.
1.5 3cyl FI
2.0 4cyl FI
3.0 6cyl FI
4.0 8cyl FI

all to save cost by using the same parts. A 2.2 would not fit this scheme.

What exactly do you think is going to happen? As soon as they shut down production, your M3 is going to explode? Enjoy the car for as long as you want to keep it. I for one am excited to eventually own a TT M3...in it's 2nd year of course
