Red Lining

Today I was thinking, I have driven pick up trucks now for the last 12-15 years. This is my first real performance car. Anyway, so nearly daily I am red lining my new M3 and really just driving it hard and fast (autobahns). I would like to ask some more experienced members here, if I am somehow damaging the engine or shortening the life by doing what I consider some pretty routine hard core driving?

This car goes so easily to red line it freakin amazing.

I would say you are causing no ill effects. The engine is meant to work in the entire RPM range. Perhaps prolonged high RPM cruising and banging it off the limiter repeatedly will cause some stress to the engine though.

I'm sure if the OP tries hard enough he can abuse the transmission and engine.... Shorten probably, by how much who knows, outside of driving the car hard take proper care of it and hopefully that'll be long enough.

F**K, you have access to autobahn, let loose for all us over here!!!!!

ROFL, nice going that way in a few weeks... But for some reason the OP will have more fun, that will change once we hit Vegas.

+1 Tho, I guess there is the Ranger and some smaller Japanese or Korean ones.

Don't worry about the redlining the engine, it was made specifically to be driven at high RPM.

This is what I thought, but just wanted to get a reading from the good folks here.

I am an American, living in Germany. I brought my 5 year old Toyota Tacoma over here last year. Before that I had a Chevy. In the States my hobbies were hunting and fishing. Over here these are difficult hobbies to have. I quickly got sick of the right lane. So I did allot of research and test drives (Porsche, Audi & BMW) and decided the car for me was the M3. I have owned it now for about a month and just love driving it.

Indeed, M-cars are made for exactly that which does not mean you can just constantly redline the car. It's still a piece of mechanical engineering subject to wear and tear. To keep the V-8 in fair shape for long enough I think warming up your engine well enough before pushing really is truly the most important thing to observe. IMO a good warm-up is more than just driving 3 minutes or 2 - 3 kms! I would say at least 10 kms should be driven without flooring throttle and probably staying below 5000 rpm.

German Autobahns are a treat indeed (at least as long as there's no jam or road works). I enjoyed some open stretches last summer when driving to Austria. Driving + 230 km/h legally is awesome.
