Maybe a dumb question (and I hope it is for your sake) but have you tried resetting your MPG indicator? If it has been reading the average for over 1000 miles, not much is going to make it change from 14mpg, but if you reset it, and get on the highway at 65mph for a few miles, I guarantee you will average 20+

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet, but you're prob looking at your average MPG since the car was new... and as such probably won't budge much. You can reset this pretty easily on idrive.

I wouldn't worry about it. that sounds perfectly normal mate, as stated by the members above. These are very powerful engines and the consume copious amounts of gas and oil. If you're averaging that you're driving the car properly

Thought I would post a gas cubby screen shot. This is what I'm getting with New Plugs, New o2 sensors, and a Tune. Mostly City Driving.

First couple weeks I had it I got 17.8 on average. Then I got comfortable with it and it dropped to 15.6, mainly because traffic and my foot gained some weight. The last 2 tanks I've been a bit more happy and gotten 14.5. Funny thing is that on back roads and spirited driving days I get 18-20 mpg.

I've had my 08 with 42 miles for about a month and drive 60 miles roundtrip a day in the DC metro area. Mostly highway driving but in the evening there is a lot of stop n go and I have been averaging 19-19.5 mpg (actual numbers by resetting miles driven after last gassing up divided by gallons put in tank when next filling up) I would call myself a moderate driver, don't drive it like its stolen but do like to step on it every now and then. I think you should be getting better than 14 mpg, not sure what's going on there!

Are you guys resetting your trip compute per tank?
Otherwise your numbers are averaging over an extremely long period of miles. I go off miles per tank while pushing the trip odo on the cluster. I'll do 135 avg per tank run down to about 12 miles left to go to bone dry. If I'm lucky I'll hit 150 for the same tank. The highest I've ever hit was on road trips to the desert or one time I took it to Big Sur. Those don't count. If you're not getting those kind of figures you shoulda bought a commuter to waste your money on. You buy a car like this to consume mass quantities of petrol. Not to sip on it like a boring family sedan. |

I use Fuelly to track the mileage in my cars (not that I care about the MPGs in the m3), but I find that the mpg calculations from your vehicle tend to be inaccurate.

I've only done 4 or 5 tanks so far. But I'm avg. about 18 with very little highway. Mostly country roads with city occasionally.
I'm hoping for over 20 on an upcoming road trip. |

I get 21mpg in the city (11L/100km), but I usually leave my car on D2.

I do a lot of city driving vs highway miles and im averaging about 16-17 city driving mostly. But when I hit the freeway im too in the 20-22 mile range pure freeway driving.
But my first week or 2 with the car my gas mileage was crap lol. I think I saw about 12-14 mpg because my foot was in it everywhere I went until I got that out of system lol. Plus i immediately changed the filthy stock air filter, fresh oil change, I only run shell or chevron 91oct, and drop some techron in all in the first week because I have no clue when it was done last. Just my own ocd though, but it did help |

Are you in normal mode or power mode? Wondering if that even makes a difference in mileage.

+1 about mpg improving in power mode when not racing also noticed on my e92 M3. There's a theory that if an acceleration to bring the car to speed is shorter then there are less engine rotations under the acceleration and therefore less total friction energy to overcome over that time. Once speed returns to more constant (no acceleration) friction is much less. Of course that's only true the throttle is used within the limits of linear power delivery versus gas consumption. Obviously not in deeper throttle where the engine is running rich in gas.
