You get a much deeper and louder tone doing it this way vs. replacing the perforated piping.

Which method sounds closest to the OEM M performance exhaust?

I did just the two long perforated pipes, and the car sounds really nice, you can hear a bit when cruising, and when you step on it, it sounds sweet.... Very loud!

Based on this, I wouldn't replace all pipes, just the two long baffles!

my 2 cents!

I'll toss my pennies into that hat too.

Doesn't this hurt (or increase) the car its performance because you are changing the exhaust's airflow design etc?

Is it safe to say test-pipes + ACM exhaust mod for a daily driver might be a little much? I like loud cars, but a E90 M3 shouldn't sound like a nascar IMO. All the sound clips sound raspy, but it seems like the motor isn't warmed up. I want the performance of test pipes, with the sound of the ACM exhaust (only). Guess you can't have your cake and eat it too.

Exact setup I have been considering. Wondering if it will be too loud/raspy...

I don't see where the rasp comes in if everything is stock and just doing the ACM mod. The rasp comes from removing resonators... The ACM mod is not raspy by itself compared to if you did the mod and resonator less. But people have differently tolerances to what is raspy and what isn't.

Agreed.
I was referring to adding test pipes.
ACM by itself should sound perfect (no rasp).
I had a WS6 with cutouts a long time ago (similar to straight pipes) no rasp at all.

Can anyone tell me the size and thickness of the pipe used to replace the perforated pipes in the middle section? Thanks

Adding the test pipes to the ACM mod is what concerns me as well.

I've replaced two perforated pipes with solid, removed centre cat/resonator with solid pipe.

It's mega loud and fairly raspy above 3000rpm. I mean VERY loud. But I think I like it. From way too quiet oem to maybe a bit too much? I don't know, I keep smiling.

Nice sounding piece but I can't stand the plain look of the oem muffler.

From what I can tell, yes it will be loud and raspy. The OEM exhaust alone is already pretty loud (for my standards anyway). What is a big no no for is the rasp. I'm more looking for that deep tone.

So IMHO, Test pipes + OEM exhaust mod = no
Test pipes + other exhaust (I think I'm going to go with Megan exhaust) = yes.

But I'm happy with the way my exhaust sounds, so I'm in no rush to chop everything off and start over.

Finally get to hear it myself instead of the drivers position. A bit too raspy. Add resonator back or h-pipe like akrapovic maybe??

This is what the left and right cans look like inside if you've never seen them. They criss-cross thru the center of the muffler.

We cut out the pipes and re-directed the Y-pipe straight thru bypassing the center of the can.

Last step is to weld on the titanium tips and throw it on the car..

Painted it black..

sorry to open an old forum, but I was wondering what you did with the pipe that goes through the center of the mufflers.

The middle pipes remain untouched with the straight thru (outter) method. There is also the version that just the center pipes are modified, which is a bit quieter.
