OEM 219M + Stoptech 380mm BBK

So I was driving through a school zone and I smelled something burning. So I pulled over and my front left rotor disc was glowing hot! Not really...8th session the left wheel kept locking up on left hand turns which was really odd (inside wheel???). So I pull in and there's a little bonfire inside of my wheel and the rotor disc is glowing orange...pretty scary looking. OF COURSE...my fire extinguisher is in my 330 (also broken...another story). Thank god for bottled water.

The result...



I asked a BMW Service Manager that was there if it was covered under warranty. He laughed (I asked in a joking manner). What happened was I killed a fresh set of PF01s in 4 days so I was pretty much on the backing plate at that point on the rear side pad...maybe 1 micrometer of pad left. Not to mention I boiled the SRF so bad that it never came back. I decided to install the BBK that I've had laying around for awhile instead of spending $25 to get a new dust boot.

So I just finished installing a Stoptech ST60/380mm front and ST40/355mm rear BBK, yay! I run square rear OEM 219Ms and the ST60s clear the spokes, no problem. But you have about the height of a wheel weight between then top of the caliper and the inside of the wheel. You must stick the wheel weights all the way on the inside of the wheel barrel.

The clearance is equal to the thickness of a wheel weight.

Will wheel deformation under lateral load or thermal expansion of the caliper assembly potentially cause an interference issue? Hope it's one of the thick style wheel weights

Lol...of course not. It's from track use and running the pads low. I was shocked to see how fast they wore. The outer pads had a little left but the inner pads were done.

Rainy day, got one dry session in. The brakes as a whole were much better. Not so on or off. I think I would prefer a pad with less initial bite than the pagid yellows. Still a touch grabby for my taste. Glad I didn't go with PF01s.

I ran some 01's down last weekend and one front wheel went limp. I pulled in to check and even though I had a couple mils, they glazed and made the rotor look metal shavings.

It was odd. The rotor felt hotter than ever. I threw some 08s in and everything was fine for 2 more sessions.

I'm starting to think the 01s are just not the best pad for this car.

I agree. I think something with less torque and easier to modulate is the way to go. Maybe a PF97?

Yikes. I saw an STi at Lime Rock this past season lose braking and slide off into the grass with the left front on fire. Brake caught on fire and probably ignited the plastic fender liner. Pretty scary.

Enjoy the StopTechs. I have the same front/rear combo and love them. I finally trusted myself enough to do my first pad change on my own a couple of weeks ago, taking out the RS29s and putting back in the Street Perf pads for the winter. Not too bad. Did it while putting on the winter wheels/tires.

Do you have a StopTech setup on the 330Ci as well?

Yeah but the 330 has St40 front calipers and St22 rear calipers. The only shared part is the ST40 pads.
