Easiest way to get a full sw update done?

Hi,

Just picked up a 06/2009 E90 M3 yesterday with 12k miles on the clock. It hasn't had any updates done, which I'd of course like to do. The car was bought about 400 miles from here, so my regular local dealer hasn't seen it yet. So I can do one of two things:

1) Contact my local dealer and set up an appointment to get it updated. This will cost me money.

2) Since there's 12 months of full BMW warranty on it, if I have a suitable set of problems to justify an update done under warranty, then I can get it done for free.

Needless to say, I'm aiming for option 2. So my question is, what are some well known issues that are fixed with later software updates - ones that I can use to justify getting an update done from the dealer?

If your car has never received DME or DCT software updates your best bet is to complain about DCT lag and engagement issues - there's a relatively new DCT software update that's required and when DCT is being updated all other modules, including the DME, will get updated and this should cost you absolutely nothing because your car is still under warranty.

Perfect, that sounds ideal! Do DCT lag/engagement errors throw any codes? If not, then it should be a shoe-in.

Had it done today. How do I check the version of the DME/DCT software, so I can see if they really did anything or not?

You'd need to ask the dealership for a computer printout or it might be on your receipt if the DCT software was updated due to the SIB.
