New (to me) E92 M3
Hey everyone,
I joined this forum back in December and never posted anything except for a couple of things in the past week. I always admired all of the M3's on here and hoped to buy one in the near future. I finally got my hands on an 08 e92 m3 about a month ago. It had all of the options that I wanted except for heated seats and backup sensors which I didn't mind at all. It's stick instead of DCT because I have never had a stick car and I thought this would be a good opportunity. So far I only bought the matte black kidney grills for the front which I installed myself (even though it's easy, it was quite rewarding!) and I just bought the fabspeed maxflo exhaust from forum member akh23456. Here is a crappy iphone pic- I'm sure you guys have seen plenty of pics of a black 08 e92 haha. Also, I previously had a 2010 Camaro SS so I still can't get over the handling in this car. And the redline! Last edited by aaranzabal; 08-24-2011 at 03:31 PM.. |

The Camaro is great for mods too but I never got around to anything besides an exhaust. Another big problem I had was the lack of differences between the V6 and the V8. Surely there were some slight cosmetic changes but the fact that you could get a V6 for 20 grand and a V8 fully loaded for about double that made me realize that eventually my car would start to look like the Mustang... which (no offense to mustang owners) I definitely didn't want to happen because they're EVERYWHERE. I even considered getting an e46 m3 until I saw the deals on the 08 e92's. The two things I enjoy in the e92 the most so far are the handling and the fact that I got it stick. This is probably because these were the two features lacking in my previous car. I don't even miss the Camaro at all to be honest and I keep finding excuses to drive the M3. Oh and another thing... I'll be driving from Houston to San Diego this Friday so it should be interesting to see how the M3 holds up on such a long trip. |

Congrats!! I too got an M3 as my first 6MT car and created this thread which prompted some very helpful replies, which is a testament to the quality of this forum and its members: http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=501071

- The higher up the rev range you shift with this engine, the easier it is because of how quickly the revs fall. Because of this I tend to shift no earlier than 3.5-4K even when cruising lazily around town (that and because this engine sounds so sweet, of course). I've found that I frequently need to add a fair amount of throttle during UPshifts before I reach the clutch engagement point to compensate for the quick RPM drop if I want to avoid jerking the car. This is most noticeable shifting into 2nd (since it takes a while to engage anyway, more detail below), 5th, and to a lesser extent 6th. 3rd is pretty easy and 4th can be upshifted into so quickly that you generally don't need to apply throttle. - 2nd gear has to be eased into, either on upshifts or downshifts -- ESPECIALLY on WOT upshifts. This has made me think that the 6MT is not an ideal drag racer because I'm scared to think what would happen if I jammed the shifter into 2nd given that I can feel synchro resistance. Resistance has substantially reduced overall as I've put more miles on the car (after about 2200 miles it really smoothed out) but WOT upshifts still need to be handled with care. - A 3>2 rev-matched downshift requires a lot of throttle and care, but it sure sounds sweet if you're doing 40-50 and makes you feel like a god if you do it 100% smoothly. - I've found that having the Power button on Sport helps with rev-matching. Sport Plus was a bit too much and Normal requires a lot more throttle to get right, plus it didn't feel as "urgent" around town.

I did notice that the later I shift the easier it is. That problably relates to the fact that I get abou 12.5 mpg so far... As for your comment about second gear, I do try to ease into it but it still jerks from time to time. I can finally sihft smoothly from 2nd to 3rd and all the way to 6th but I have a hard time going from 1st to 2nd as well as downshifting from 3rd to 2nd. I'm about to leave work and drive the M3 so I'll try to adjust the power button and see how it affects my shifting. I've been using Sport Plus so that could be causing some of the jerkiness. I'll update you on how it feels. |

P.S. I see you're in Houston; if you ever have reason to drive up to Austin I'd be happy to ride along if you'd like.

Welcome to the M3 family.
Being a guy who's been in a similar boat (Owned a 2003 Z06, 2004 CTS-V and also 2010 335i with a 1M Coupe on the way) I can understand where you are coming from. The interior in the Z06 and the CTS-V are not even close to being up to par with the BMW, and while now their handling is getting close, you just get the sense that the M3 is just better in every way shape and form. Happy modding and hope to see you on the board! |
