Gran Turismo vs Real Life

I play a lot of gran turismo to practice my lines when off the track. Many think it's just a game, but with the proper setup the physics are almost spot on and the tracks are extremely close to their real life counterparts. It becomes more apparent when you spend a lot of time at the same track in real life and in the game. In my case it's at Laguna Seca. I always felt the GT5 series was just a game, but when I started taking what I learned at the real track and applying it in game, I started to realize how much of a simulation this game really is.

My times in GT5 are quite a bit faster because I can go through the corners much faster without fear of losing control and crashing. I noticed I'm a good 10-15mph faster around the fast corners. I also brake later in the game. With more seat time I should be able to get closer to my time in game (eventually).

Awesome like the comparison. I remember someone did this for the Ring as well. I too am an avid fan of GT5, great for familiarisation of tracks when at home.

I also enjoy GT quite a bit. I play mostly in the off season to keep the reflexes and cognitive memory sharp (at least so I like to believe ) and to get rid of the winter blues.

I just wish I had my local tracks in the GT inventory . Must be great to be able to practice in the virtual world .

I love the side by side vid...are the road/engine noises coming from the game and not the real life clip?

I saw a TG episode where Clarkson did the same thing as you in an NSX. also on Laguna Seca with similar results

Sounds are coming from the real clip. Go Pro's capture tons of wind noise.

Let me tell you something funny. I bought Forza MS 4 because it had Sebring, which is my favorite track in FL. I actually do better times in real life compared to the game; and I've tried pretty much all the race cars

The braking points in the game are so stupid, if you brake that late and try to turn the car in it will never happen considering how much you overload the front tires.

I was so used to using the real line and the real braking points while playing the game, all the other cars were passing me! LOL

Not bad, four things have caught my eye:

-You're not using either the inside or the outside curbs, you're at least a couple feet away from them. As long as the curbs are dry, they're your friends.

-In a couple of corners you're missing the apex and then straightening the wheel too early, meaning you can't accelerate as quickly as you would if you had taken them right

-The fact that you're missing the apex might be due to the car. What tire pressures are you running, that is your alignment, what are your suspension settings? You have a nicely loaded car, make sure you talk to a shop with a racing heritage so they can set you up right.

-Most people do this mistake when first tracking, they look right in front of them. Expand your vision and look ahead. Your hands will lead the car where you're looking. If you look at the distance coming out of the corner then you will lead the car there taking the right line.

Please don't get offended by my comments, I'm only trying to help you achieve what you want. I'm no pro myself.

I have forza as well and to be honest, GT5 is much more realistic when it comes to track and car physics. When I do exactly what I do at the real track in GT5, I get very fast lap times. When I do the same in Forza, it's a nightmare.

As far as missing apexes goes, I don't think so. It's possible that I wasn't right on the berm on a few during this video (from my first session in the morning), but I generally go over all the berms at Laguna. Also keep in mind that the video is wide angle from the middle of the car so it looks further away from the corners than I really am. My alignment and tire pressures are fine. My problem is just lack of experience and confidence to brake later and carry more speed into the corners. Most of the instructors that have ridden with me in the past tell me to keep doing what I'm doing and just get more seat time. I'll get faster with more confidence. But you are right in one thing. I need to practice looking ahead more. It's still one of those things I keep forgetting to do at times and isn't quite natural yet.

If you're not hearing the "brrrrrmp" of the LS berms, you're probably not riding them enough, both at the apex and at the exit. I notice you're leaving quite a bit of room at the exits of 2, 4, 5, 9, 10, and 11 in particular.

Right. But as I said earlier, this is just 1 lap in the first session. The only reason I chose it was because it one of the only ones where I had a clean lap with the go pro mounted front and center. But you are right I tend to leave room at the exists, but that's mostly because I'm going into the corners too slow in the first place. It's just a bad habit because I don't feel like the car needs to track out. Here's a slightly better lap for the nitpickers:

Hitting the apex on left turns is easier since it's on the driver side, but you'll just have to take my word for it.

Sebring looks like a lot of fun. Another track I've only been able to drive in GT5.

No need to drive your car to the exit if it doesn't really need the room. And it's good that you're not pinching off the exits, which is dangerous and which I've seen some guys do because they are afraid of the outside edge of the track but are carrying the kind of speed that calls for using the whole track.

At any rate, I'm working on using more of the whole track at LS as well. For the life of me, I couldn't reach the apex berm at T10 the last time out and I tend to leave a few feet at the exits of T5 and T9 because the track goes off camber at the exits and I am afraid of the consequences of testing the limits in those turns.

You need to turn everything off and use sport hard tires. I do have ABS set to 1 though.

Hey, I'm doing this with a stupid remote in my hands buddy. It's hard to play with that thing. Cut me some slack

How accurate is GT5 in terms of lap times? I just did N'ring with E92 M3 with Soft Racing Tires and pulled off a 7:46.57. Should I start looking for some real sponsors?

In case it wasn't entirely clear, GT Academy produces real and often very good professional drivers, some of whom have gone on to race at the very real 24 Hours of LeMans. However, you do have to be very very good at the simulation thing to get into the GT Academy.
