MT will be fun as well.

I am in the club...MT for the new M3for sure...

Sorry for the hijack...
Wow, what a support!
Seems like a new thread is necessary: "Official M3post MT supporters' club founded." What would be the right section for that?

Best regards, south

I haven't driven one yet, but I've never seen a stick that couldn't be fixed with an SSK

I am not impressed with the MT action in my '01 M3. An ACS SSK helped a bit, but still not like the proverbial knife through butter. A little notchy. That is one reason I may consider the DCT. That, and eliminating the possibility of money shifts at the track.

What's up with all you guys defecting from M-DCT to manual? Granted I've never owned an automagic/chicktronic tranny in my entire driving career BUT.... the M3's character just doesn't jive with a manual tranny!

Don't be scared off by possible bugs. That's what a warranty is for. BTW, I have been feeling the same way as you guys.... "maybe I should stick with stick" ... but... the manual in my now-departed Z4 M Coupe was the most artificial-feeling, unsatisfying manual transmission I've ever owned. It was a PITA, even after I removed the clutch delay valve. Which is why I wouldn't risk getting a MANUAL in the M3! The clutch had no feeling, it was just like an in-out lever. The shifter felt light, flimsy, yet notchy. It just sucked IMO. I won't buy another "modern day" BMW manual tranny. They have softened it up to the point it is just a lever for changing gears with a pedal attached to keep your left foot entertained (and being ADD myself, my left foot is going to protest my M-DCT choice, but I digress...)

In sum, IMO (of which I have many) don't let POTENTIAL bugs scare you away from M-DCT if that's what you'd rather have.

I don't know how much improvement the 6MT of the E92 M3 will have over my E46 M3's, what I do know is that if the M-DCT with a 420hp V8 is as great as the DSG of my GTI with a 200hp I4 it will be really something...

I loved the manual in both of my E46 M3's. I also love the manual in my 330i, especially after driving/owning various other cars (...G35, my g/f's Saab 9-3, etc.).

Each to his own.
Personally, I really enjoy driving a manual car once I am comfortable with the shift and clutch action, I feel involved when blipping for downshifts and enjoy trying to operate the car smoothly.

To me, a manual feels far more involved than a non-clutch car.

I will be sticking with 6MT.

Well, opinionated as you are, I have to agree with you on this one, even if my opinion doesn't really count because I drive my car with the steering wheel on the wrong side!

The paddle change is so much more involving, as it allows you to keep your hands on the wheel, right at the heart of the action. If you're blasting along a country road, or throwing the car around a track, it makes much more sense to be able to change up and down the box without taking your hands off the wheel. Changes are faster, often smoother and, as you say point out, it's warranted if anything goes wrong.

I think I'll probably delay delivery of my next M3 until the new DCT box comes along...

I prefer a manual on an open road... but getting stuck in downtown traffic for an hour in a manual isn't my idea of sheer driving pleasure. I'll be waiting for the DCT. The SMG2 sucks on the road but is excellent on track... lets hope the DCT has the best of both world.

Great news. I hope M-DCT is on schedule and I'll be able to see it in LA.

E, S, etc., don't get going too much about the "MT club". I'll have to gather up Filthy and all the automated manual enthusiasts to you guys around .

Let's not turn this thread into a another MT vs. AMT debate that was beat to death in many places, most notably here.

Picture of the new M5 shift lever for reference:
(btw I doubt BMW will make something look identical in an M series as an X5..., just MHO)

Yeah, time is on our side, you have to catch up then...

+1 on the debate, we should stick to the DCT information here.
