White and black cars are difficult to photograph. It's tough to pick up the low light details without over exposing the highlights and vice versa.

Yep, practice metering off the brightest parts of the car and then boosting the mids and shadows in post. One thing that works great in direct sunlight is a high f-stop, f14 or so, a high speed shutter: 1/3000 or 1/4000 and then aim a hot shoe flash directly at your subject. You made the right choice with Canon.
