All BMW's to get Twin turbos?

http://www.carversation.com/2008/04/...win-turbo-v-8/

I'm not sure if this or anything about this has been posted prior, but after reading it I feel like TT will be the base of all bmw engines from now on.
Makes you wonder where the limit is on HP. Are cars just going to add more and more power each year until a civic si can beat a veyron in 2030? haha

who knows, but it's interesting to think about

I Civic Si can beat a 128i automatic. FACT

I can spend $3,000 on a turbo kit, everything I need included to bump my Civic Si from 200hp to 320hp. 0-60 as fast as a 135i

Uuhhh... whut? Civic is FWD car. There is no way it can properly transfer the torque to the ground quickly enough to out-drag a 135i unless you put big ol' stickies up front and gut the car. At that point, who wants it as a daily driver anyway?

With sticky 225/40's and a REAL LSD its possible with proper clutch work. The torque wouldn't be as great as a 135i but the hp would be. And it would weigh 300# less. NO WAY would I do this, I would rather get a 135i. I know a guy who spent $8k on his Red Si sedan and its a screamer.

Ehhh, it's a stretch.. but for argument's sake, let's just say that's true: Tuned Civic Si = Speed of 135i. Here's the kicker... at the end of the day, you'd still be driving a HONDA!! After taking delivery of my 135i, I have to say this is THE ultimate driving machine. A honda will never come close to the look, feel, refinement, and panache of a BMW. But hey, to each his own.

I see you're in an '07 Si... does that mean you didn't see my guy at Knauz?

That isn't going to happen. (Remember I owned a 06 Civic Si for a year). The fastest Civic Si I have read about on 8thcivic.com did 14.1 @ 100 (The Fastest) and to do that, you have beat the crap out of the trans/engine etc.

The 135i can beat those numbers without trying.

If you read again, he said vs. a 128, NOT a 135.

I said I would never do anything to this Civic Si. Its a stepping stone for 1-2 years. I wouldn't waste my money on mods. As far as looks, that again is an opinion. I think my 07 black Si sedan looks great along with many people who comment on it and can't believe how nice/quick it is(stock) I have been to Knauz several times and spoken to Tony(ABE) Abrahms. I will probably order one in Jan/Feb 09 like I have planned to do since I found this site.

WOW, I wish I never read or commented on this thread.

I have no intentions to mod my Civic Si. I do know a person whos about 25 that did the whole 9 yards to his red 07 Si sedan. It puts down some serious numbers, and I know he has to beat the shit out of it to get good numbers.

My Si is a stepping stone. I got bored driving my fully modded automatic 07 Acura TL Type-S. At work we were going through an ESOP and I was worried about loosing my job. With $25k on credit cards, I figured I would sell the Acura, get a cheap fun 6-speed manual Si, and pay off my debts. In 10 months I have payed off $18k of the $25k visa debt. When they are all payed off around Sept/Oct 08, I will save for a good down payment, then order a 135i in Jan/Feb 09. I CAN afford to buy the car now, but don't want to have the credit card bills over my head.

I don't get all the hate .. lol ... the Civic Si's are good looking cars and drive pretty good to. Plus you get to rev it to the moon ..anyway ... I think you made a good choice as a stepping stone ... also .. if you could get 320hp from an Si .. that thing would scream if you could get the power to the ground .. those cars are pretty light ..

Now back on topic for the OP ...

I think it is the right way to go .. I think we will be seeing more turbo setups from all brands .. it is efficient and you can make good numbers with small displacement. Now if they also keep some larger displacement motors w/ turbo set up ... can't go wrong there either .. LOL

No hate here for the Civic Si...I used to have one, and its a incredible car. My beef is, even if you turbo charge the car it will not be faster than the 135i.

We are having a discussion. :iono:

Before I post my opinion...
I love Honda, I had an 07 civic and it was one of the most reliable cars I ever owned....(all I did was change the oil)
My wife has an 07 CRV and it is the best family car we have every owned....
I belive every manufacturer has strengths and weaknesess, and with that...

I own a 128i and here are the specs from honda on an Si

SiEngine TypeIn-Line 4-CylinderEngine Block/Cylinder HeadAluminum-AlloyDisplacement (cc)1998Horsepower @ rpm197 @ 7800Torque (lb.-ft. @ rpm)139 @ 6100Redline (rpm)8000Bore and Stroke (mm)86 x 86Compression Ratio 11.0:1Valve Train16-Valve DOHC i-VTEC®Stainless Steel Exhaust ManifoldStandardMulti-Point Fuel InjectionStandardDrive-by-Wire™ Throttle SystemStandardFront-Wheel DriveStandardCARB Emissions RatingLEV-2Direct Ignition System with ImmobilizerStandard100K +/- Miles No Scheduled Tune-Ups*Standard

a 128i comes standard with the I6 with 230hp....not even trying to throttle it and giving up the acceleration of a 135(which is evident between the two 1's)

there is no way with out modifying the Si (which with current turbos would only bump you to 202Hp)
can a Civic Si overtake a 128i

I am not a hater...facts are facts...you can't push ponies you do not have...

With that being said....

Civic Si owners....you are not paying $4.00 a gl for gas so rejoice and be glad!!!! : ) : )

to the extent that turbos(single or dual) are being incorporated into new engines by bmw and other manufacturers, it is to improve fuel efficiency, not to increase power. that is, forced induction is being substituted for displacement.

My last comment(ok be happy, thats fine)

The Si with 11:1 comp needs premium fuel. I payed $4.15 yesterday for 93 octane.

The Si runs 0-60 in 6.3
The 128i auto runs 0-60 6.7
The 128i manual runs 0-60 6.1

No one is trying to upset you or make you not continue the discussion...
I mean, both are great cars...this though is a bmw 1 series forum and it kind of seemed at first that you were tyring to compare...

$4.15 for 93 would be a welcome...I was talking about $4 for 91....

The Si with the 11:1 is going to ring in at 6.3 but the 128 doesn't even have a turbo on it...and for arguments sake, comes in at 6.7 you are talking apples and oranges for less than half a second...

at the end of the day, if buying the Si and modifying it to claim it can over take a german car built for overall perfection is what makes you happy...by all means...

I will concede your Si can overtake my 128i with a difference of .4 of a sec....
I am thrilled I have the ultimate driving machine!

: )

now lets back to talking about the fact that not just BMW but all import makers are hinting at twin turbos and yes, I read an article that it is not for power but efficency

To do 6.3s with the Civic Si requires a massive Rev at launch and that's not the average. Car and Driver only got 6.7s from the Si, and 6.8s for the Mugen Si.

The car and driver were for the sedan (a little heavier than the coupe probably).. here is motortrend w/ the si coupe posting 0-60 in 6.3 ..
