I have an 06. Its been a great car. Good performance and much better chassis fell than E70. Hasn't given me a single issue.

We had a 4.8iS from 40k miles to 105k miles. It saw 14.4's in the 1/4 mile and over 140mph a few times.

Ours was dually beat on so we had a lot of wear and tear items. We regularly towed boats and jet ski's with it and i've even taken in on the track in the rain before. We bought lots and lots of tires for this thing and they' aren't cheap.

Unfortunately ours did have issues. Air suspension problems twice (totaling over 2k) and towards the end of it's life the torque converter was slipping. This might've been driver induced, so don't manually shift it a lot(we have a place in the mountains) or break launch the car. It seems like some transmissions go and some don't. From what i've heard they usually don't pop until until over 120 to 140,000 miles if they do but none the less it was going to be a 4k plus repair for a new transmission so we traded it.
I feel like if you drive this car mostly on the highway and never tow or romp on it repeatedly, you wouldn't need to worry about the transmission until the 200k+ mark.

Another thing to note is the transmission sometimes shifted too much, especially on hilly roads so it could get confused and was sometimes obtrusive. This was the first SUV with a 6 speed auto. It is always looking to shift up, even when you don't want it to. We also replaced CV boots about 3-4 times in that time period.
The bright side is, the fuel mileage wasn't "horrible" but it wasn't good. In town you can expect 15-15.5mpg or 16.5 if you baby it. On the highway 19-19.5 going 75-83mph and 20-21mpg going 65-74mph.

It was a sweet car, and feels a lot more nimble then the newer X5's. You can feel a lot more road through your butt, and the steering feel is better then many brand new BMW's.
However, if it were my money i'd skip the older model and get a new 3.5i with fixed suspension and a Cobb accessport. 400hp, 25mpg, extra space, less money spent on tires and no suspension worries

Swing for the 35i. Better performance, mileage and reliability. Best daily/utility car for the money. You can find the 11's for 35k now. It towed like a beast and hauled like a truck.

I had a 2006 4.8is, daily driver.

It's going to cost you $$$$. The air suspension leaks, the CV joints need attention often, the steering pump lines are a known issue, the interior trim peels easily, the tranny is weak, the brake pads go quickly, sun roof has a mind of its own.

My wife has a new E70, I do like the old one better, felt 500lbs lighter. That being said, I'd never buy one again just because they are $$$.

Oh, and I had recurrent CEL light....leading to major repairs.

Thanks for all of the additional comments guys. Been doing a lot more research and am getting a little less enthusiastic about it. Suspension and tranny issues look to be relatively common and may be hard to get covered by an extended warranty. Bummer. Maybe time to look towards a 35 or 35d like so many have suggested.

got a 2012 x5 5.0 the twin turbo v8 one. I love it. Overall awesome suv and I looked at porshe range mercedes etc... It does eat gas like an m3 though but it also hauls ass for a big car.

Sounds like the tow capacity is 6,000lbs for the diesel, thought it would have been higher. Some things I read say that is the limit of the OEM hitch and that the car can actually handle more.

That is true. Tow rating is chasis based. My 3.0 has 6000 lb tow rating but I've had about 3500 behind it and that's about it, limited by engine. My plan was to get the x5d and trailer my e46 to the track at some pt. Will be right at limit though.

Honestly the 2001-2006 X5 looked really bad IMO. It just did. When I was shopping for an X5 my buddy owned a 2002 X5 for years and the interior for the time was nice but I didnt like the exterior. Looked to 1980s. So I parked a 2009 next to a 2003 X5 at the dealer and there was no question which was better IMO. Bought cash and never looked back.

Fast forward and that same friend got into an E70 and loved it.

Agreed. E53 is ugly. I am not liking the spy photos of the newest iteration either. Way too big. I would just get a tahoe at that pt.

The e70 handled this 6k lbs like nobody's business. The tow rating is more than likely based off of the limited wheelbase and low tongue weight ability rather than lack of power or brakes. The e70 was my favorite tow vehicle, I could literally pass people going up the grape vine,in tow, in excess of 80mph, until my wife would bring me back to planet earth and tell me to slow the F down. It literally towed better than my tundra. Insert pic whoring....
