Yuck! I get 27-28mpg on the 911turbo X50 and there is no reason for the M3 to have worst milage since it has less HP. Well, if it is heavy maybe...

Johnny, I'd go to a different dealer if I were you. Your story is the first I've heard of a dealer not taking a deposit for the new M3.

In early 2009 I am buying SOMETHING. I want an M3, but if they price it unreasonably I may go w/ a 335i or look at other manufacturers...but...I really prefer BMW.

Sorry, but if you're getting 27-28 mpg with your X50 turbo, then you must be driving with a strong wind, down a hill and like grandpa! My 997 turbo never got close to that kind a mileage.

Just drive drive on highways with cruise control on. If you drive in the city your probably seeing 16mpg.

It struck me today that the Z4M coupe starts at $50k (M3 start at only 58k?)
and
M5 $82k
M6 $99k

$17k diff between M5 and M6 (99-82)

An M3 starting at $66k would perfectly split the gap between the M and M5.

At this price there would be perfect $16k gaps between all M models...

M $50k
M3 $66k
M5 $82k
M6 $99k

shit i'm so poor.

Good data, but I think your initial assumption is off base.

The new M3 will NOT perfectly split the M and the M5. The M3 will be much closer to the M than the M5 unless BMW unveil a COMPLETELY different car than the Concept M3 we've seen so far.

I think to warrant a base price of 66K USD for an M3, BMW would have to have performance characteristics that are WAY out of range for their current line of cars. The 335i does 0-60 in 4.8 seconds and the M5/M6 does that run in 4.2. Who is rightly going to pay 66K base with NO options for an M car that does 0-60 in 4.5 seconds and goes around the Ring in over 8:10?

If BMW does release this car at 66K, meaning reasonably optioned at 74K MINIMUM, I think they will miss about 70-80% of the target audience for the M3. People will buy a 911 that may be a fraction slower but turns heads the way NO BMW can.

I think the M3 will be 53K as the base price. Based on numerous sources including the Euro discount sales price (for US military, US spec car) at 50K.

Agree about the 911. IMO I think, worst case, the base M3 coupe will come in at $60-62. Well optioned, your looking at $65-68. Having said that, don't forget the RS4, with options, is priced in the low $70's. This may be over priced for what you get, but none the less ...

Totally agree with you regarding the 911. Also consider that by the time that the E92 M3 comes out -and very likely much sooner- the facelifted 911 will churn out about 20 addtional HP bringing it to 375 HP and torque numbers likely a tick over 300 for a car that will weigh in at roughly 300+ lbs less. Even with the facelift, a 911S can be had for a few grand discount bringing the HP and price disparity much closer. BMW better be very careful.
A well optioned 911S for roughly $90k minus a $5K discount ($85) v. a $68-$70k M3. Figure roughly 8.53 power to weight for the P car and 8.33 for the M.
I better get to my Porsche dealer!

Add gas guzzler and you are getting pretty close to 997 territory. A well optioned low mileage 997C2S can be had for $75 or so.

If the weight is in check, the price will be justified IMHO. If not . . .

The new BMW M3 Coupé is to be launch in the UK on Saturday 8 September 2007.

Model Code and Pricing
Model Code WD92
Description M3 Coupé
Basic Price £42,680.85
VAT £7,399.15
Retail Price £49,680.00
OTR Price £50,625.00

Which is a 25% increase over the E46.

How much was the E46? I would add 25% again to get an idea of cost.

car and driver quoted $60k not $55k.

the UK post about a 25% increase would also yield an msrp around $60k...
