is white a timeless car color?

Will white always look good and be popular on cars?

Also, why are european cars more common in black and silver paint?

I think white is one of the most underrated colors out there, and looks pretty spectacular on nearly everything.

I actually think it detracts from and hides the design of a car. It is so bright that much of the subtle details vanish instantly and it looks like a marshmallow with wheels.

? White makes the lines more apparent, I think you are referring to black.

White and silver are the two best colors for showing a cars details/lines.

It depends on the styling of the car.

White will always suit cars that have extreme surfaces with sharp cuts and sculpting, or designs that rely heavily on contrasting dark elements (see sig for example). I do agree that it can make softer designs look bloated and toned down, especially if the white is a pearl effect like Alpine White (looks boring on a 1 Series imo). Metallic whites, matte whites, and iridescent whites look sharper.

Its prevalence in motorsports probably has to do with the fact that white is a good base for liveries to be painted upon.

I believe white looks good on any/every vehicle. Never seen a car that didn't look good on white. Unfortunately, I've seen too many people seeking out white, that I'm starting to lean towards other colors.

Car color trivia- White is the only color that Corvette has used in every model year since its introduction to the present.

The 135 is the first 'new' car I've bought thats white. To me, some vehicles are suited well to certain colors and the 135 just looks super sharp in AW.

This. I think white can compliment an already good design but if the car is already so bland and shapeless then white will make it seem even more boring. Also, recently I've been getting bored of seeing so many white cars around.

Edit: Mustang looks great! Love the new rear lights look great in that pic.

White is for washing machines and other household appliances.

White with beige interiors is for older ladies and older gay men living in Palm Springs.

DuPont releases a detailed and comprehensive 'automobile color popularity report' every year (and for the past 60 years now.) Here's last year's: http://www.dupontrefinish.eu/portal/...01112111114116

Colors tend to cycle over the decades and only reflect current trends. e.g., at one time in the 1960s-70s green and brown was fashionable but not in the past few decades. White will no doubt ebb eventually as other colors become more popular. Just like with clothes, etc....

I think some bigger cars look awkward and bulky in white - for example the F10 and the E Class.

However, all the compact execs - F30, C Class and A4 - look well in white.

Probably.

Don't forget back in the early days of motorsports car paint colors were used to designate country of origin.

White was Germany. Although later Porsche, Mercedes (Silver Arrows of the 1930s) and Auto Union (Audi) all went to silver (bare metal.) Blue was France, yellow was Belgium, and green was the UK ('British racing green.') Italy used red and so did the USA (although later it was blue and white.)

The FIA stopped using color designations decades ago, but some manufacturers still use them just as a tradition (Mercedes Silver, Ferrari Red, etc..) With motorsports outside of F1 racing, teams still pretty much adhere to the original color/country designations.

I remember the first X6 I saw was white. I saw it from the rear 3/4 from a distance as it was driving away. It reminded me of an egg.

And here is the scientific reason why. Other than red, silver has been used on more iconic/famous cars than any other color:

James Dean's Spyder 550, Bond's DB5, Bond's Astin, Bond's Z8, 300SL are mostly silver, Eleanor from Gone in 60 Seconds, Delorean (I know, I know, it's still silver though), Tony Montana's Porsche 928, and on and on and on.

Proof that other than red, silver is the best color to have on a car and white is just a fad.
