Test Driving a car you know you wont buy

Hey guys,

I've been in the market and have been considering switching to a M3. I have in the past bought cars too impatiently and end up regretting decisions. This time I want to make sure I make a more informed decision.

That being said, I test drove a M3 E93 and fell in love. I've never had a convertible and there is certainly something to be said about driving with a top down.

My local dealership has a 2011 E92 on the lot and I have yet to drive a coupe M3. I want to drive it to make sure I don't like it more than the vert. If I do like it, I would have no intention of buying the car as I would want to order a new one.

My question for you is, do you think it would be wrong of me to test drive a car I would have no intention of buying? Do I make that clear to the CA or do I pretend I am interested so I can drive it? I want to be honest but I also want to drive the car as they don't have any new ones available.

It's a $65k plus purchase. If they won't spend 30 minutes letting you test drive, go somewhere else!

Sorry, I didn't mention this in my first post...it's a used 2011, not a new one. Not sure if it matters but I would not be buying the new one from my local dealership as they can't compete in price.

If you feel bad, try to test drive a used one, or don't rag the piss out of a new one that you drive. If you order from the dealer you drive it at, I really don't think you should feel bad.

They don't care how many cars u test drive... As long as u buy at least one from them they ought to be happy to show u several different models for comparison purposes.

Have no feelings, just pretend your interested if he really starts to question you say your going to order one once you do a little more research. he wont leave you somewhere on the test drive if he is suspicious that you are not buying that car.

I know what you're talking about. M3s are rare and used M3s are rare (at least where I live). I wouldn't want to put miles on a brand new M3 if I knew I wasn't going to buy it but it could be someone else's perfect car.

That said, you later clarify it's used. In that case, go ahead!

I think you're being overly concerned. Test drive whatever you want to help you come to a confident decision. If you want to be considerate, just don't rev the engine past 3500 RPM as a new car will of course still be in the break-in period.

Unless you are trying to drive a Ferrari or something like that then I wouldnt feel bad. I think test driving a M3 that they have on the lot to see if you want to order one is COMPLETELY acceptable. Also, I dont think there is any problem telling the CA that you might want to order an M3 but you would like to test drive one first.

Good luck bro!

Test drive a used one that's broken in and ready to go. Try a local carmax. I don't mean to imply that you shoiuld abuse it, but let it get up to temp and wind the motor up in 2nd and or 3rd gears and get a feel for how it behaves, if that's what you're after.

I'd be straight with them. Odds are they'll suggest you test drive one on the lot and if you ask and they decline go elsewhere.

I also see no problem test driving a used (out of break-in) car and winding it out a bit. So long as the engine is up to temp. It's what the car is designed to do.

I did this very thing. As a matter of fact, the salesperson I was discussing an order with, suggested we go drive the used one that they had for sale. He knew I had no intention of buying it up front.

I test drove two BMWs from a dealership I didn't end up buying from, and two cars at a Nissan dealership I didn't buy from either.

Test drive != obligation. Dealer knows they are not going to make 1:1 test drive:sale ratio, so you not buying a car from them won't hurt their feelings (if they have any feelings at all). Totally normal.

I would feel free to test drive their car and in return give them the option to earn your business. After the test drive tell them what another dealer will sell for and what the local dealer must do to get you to buy from them.

If you do that and they choose not to do it I think you've fulfilled your end of the bargain.

Test drive it! Dont think that test driving is like the dealer doing you a favour. Buying a $60+ car without driving it? NO!!!!!

BMW and their dealerships make enough money. Test drive it and don't feel bad. They usually have cars set aside for this.

Cool, I'm going in later today then and driving it before it's off the lot

Also, in the past, dealers let me take the car out alone and sometimes not....do you guys request to drive alone?

Some won't unless you ask. Therefore I now always ask.

It's so funny to read these posts, next thread people will be complaining about 30 miles on their brand new M3. Or that the used M3 was a 'test drive' car, probably driven hard by random people.

Honestly, I would rather not allow somebody a test drive on a PERFORMANCE car they won't buy, especially considering every little mile can change the value of the vehicle to other potential REAL buyers. Not to mention the additional detailing and cleaning that will be involved to keep it looking 'untouched' or 'semi new'.
