I have no idea why these wheel companies insist on ignoring the extra inch of room to the inside of the rear wheelwell that exists with the stock setup. The custom wheel makers like CCW and others seem to understand how to fit larger tires on the car. What's the (performance) point of a wider wheel if you can't fit anything larger than what you can get on the stock wheels? Lame. That's where people like HRE come in, made-to-order. But there's no reason the Volks couldn't be made with the correct offset so that people like me would be interested. As it sits now with their lineup, I'm not.

I suppose you could always have somebody mill 5mm off the face, but the Volks are so light already that I'd hesitate to remove any more material, even from the hub face.

Companies like Volk and Advan are all based in Japan and they have very different demand, when it comes to modding cars, even for track. Also, overall, i believe that there is a bigger demand, even in the US for these low offset wheels, than there are for wheels that will allow the use of a specific R Compound tire or a specific track set up.

Having said that, I think this is where companies like HRE shine with their ability to "customize" the wheels. These R40 are very focused on the intent for motorsport usage. Which is why they are designed to hold their ground with large BBK, such as the 380mm Brembo.

Traditionally, getting custom wheels meant having to go the 3 pc route, which tends to be heavier and also has an inherent problem with the drop center holding water and snow (in certain regions).

The R40 really is a great wheel out of box. You can really alter the way you want your car to handle with these custom wheels. 18 - 10.0 all around to 18 - 9.5 front and 18 - 10.0 rear with offsets that will allow you to go between regular street tires to the big R Compound Hoosier radials.

Weird. I've seen TE37's iwth 9.5 front and 10.5 rear lowered pretty low and no mention of rubbing. Maybe they were using smaller rubber, or didn't mention the rubbing?

Agreed, it's too bad the volk, which is a light, strong, attractive wheel is off the table and the only other options are billet wheels for 25% more money, or cast wheels that aren't wide enough or quite as nice looking, for 50% less.

It's kindof surprising that Japanese consumers don't want to fit as much tire under the car as possible given how tight a lot of their track day tracks are.

Mike, interesting, I was using the same tires with 18x10 ET20 lowered about 1.2" and -2.1 camber and I was rubbing in the rear. It was rubbing where the rear bumper meets the rear fender. It was not bad though, and did not happen all the time.
Are those TE37 SLs?

That IS strange. I rubbed when I had my P40s on (20x10.5+16 w/spacer; 285/30/20 Invo), though. Albeit with H&R springs.

These are running the new Ventus R-S3 (which are the competition to the Neova and a good one, i hear~). I am assuming that these run the 265/35-18 front and the 285/35-18 rears. I am actually surprised that they run as wide as they do. Gotta Try them soon~

These would be top on my list if I did not have the G2's! Who knows, maybe down the road anyway. I may try out those tires though once I burn through my current set!


Yeah, I think the key to the tires may not be the width number, but the actual contact patch width. Some tires are much more square than others and have a wider contact patch to them. We should get some measurements of the contact patches going! Ha!

These do have the 265/35/18 and 285/35/18 R-S3 on them. Our original plans were to run NT-05s in 275/285 combination, but delivery problems prevented that from happening and Hankook R-S3 fit the bill. The wheels fit the car great, it is lowered with KW Clubsports and has a nice stance to it with absolutely no rubbing out of the box (no spacers needed). I'm very happy with the way this car came out and look forward to putting this wheelset on more cars in the near future.

The RS-3's are very popular amongst street-tire autocrossers especially for use in hot weather, not surprising they run wide as they were designed to go head-to-head with the AD08's and RE11's of the world.

What are the offsets? Did you get a chance to put the wheels on a scale before they went on the car?

They're ET28 18x9.5 on the front, and ET30 18x11.0 in the rear.

I unfortunately didn't get a chance to weigh them as we were on a tight timeframe getting the car to the Festivals of Speed this weekend, but ship weights were 18-19 lbs so I'll assume that's pretty close to accurate. They're considerably lighter than stock, and have BBK clearance for just about any brake you could want to put on the car, the 355s on there now look tiny!

I have experience with the NT05s and really like them for aggressive street/occasional DEs. I'm anxious to give the RS-3s a shot as well.
