When I registered mine they wanted like $3k, as it was a new 2011.

Good thing I told them I was in the military and being stationed in their state was not my fault

Do a search on this forum, this has been discussed before.

Or go to the DMV website

I believe it's $4.75 in tax for every $100 of assessed value in your car.

We have to pay a personal property tax every six months.

Ok that's not too bad. It is 4.75 per $100 of the value of the car but there's a tax relief thing that reduces the amount by some I think so I wasn't sure of the exact amount.

yes, to clarify my above post, if your car is for personal use, it can qualify for tax relief, which will be minus $20,000 of your cars assessed value, then the formula kicks in.

for example, is your car is assessed to be $50,000, tax relief is then -$20,000, so you're only paying tax on the difference of the remaining $30,000.

So $4.75 for every $100 would equate to $1,425 in tax.

The comonwealth is always in your pocket. Taxing you for owning a vehicle thats B.S. Sucks for you.

If fairfax county values your car around 65k, your gonna pay close to $200 a month for just personal property tax. When you buy the car, you pay 3% sales tax.

your comment is subjective. Taxes vary by state, and some states tax things, where others do not. I believe VA is one of those states where it taxes personal property (ie automobiles) it is less so on housing, whereas in Maryland, it is the opposite.

Ever wonder why there are more people in Northern VA than in MD? Because housing tax is cheaper in VA...at least that is what i'm told. Please correct me if i'm wrong
