Can local cops give you ticket on highway?

I just got a ticket for "unsafe lane change" by a local cop on I-215 in California. I almost ran into him by not seeing him in my blind spot. There was a sunset and the sun light was right in my eyes. I did check the blind spot before the land change, but I guess the sun light blinded me there.

Do local cops have the jurisdiction on California highway?

I've never seen anyone getting a "unsafe lane change ticket". Is this ticket expensive? Has anyone got this ticket before?

Any California police officer can give a ticket in any place of the state.

Dont know about Cali., but as long as the officer is within their jurisdiction regardless if its on a highway, they can write a ticket.

He's not wondering if you SHOULD have, he was wondering if he COULD.

And the answer is yes...i dont see why he couldnt? lol

As long as the "crime" was in his jurisdiction he can give you a ticket. He doesnt even have to pull you over in his jurisdiction. Lucky thats all you got, In NJ you would have prob gotten at least careless driving(2 points) if not reckless driving(4 points).

I heard the CHP can't give you a ticket off the freeway

and LAPD can't really give you on on the highway.. unless they pull you off the highway...

if the situation starts on a street,a local cop can proceed with a stop on freeway.same with chp.has to start on freeway.

What CVC section were you charged with? The basic unsafe lane change is $134 + 1 point.

Edit: If it was in San Bernardino county, it's $246.

It's CVC section 22107. Would it be +1 point? Would it raise my insurance? I did go to traffic school about a year ago and I don't think I can get rid of this record...

22107 is slightly better. It's $146 + 1 point. As someone else mentioned before, CHP has jurisdiction on ANY public road in CA, incorporated or not. They actually have full enforcement jurisdiction, i.e. they can enforce any state law anywhere.
Even though you have had the traffic school option once in the past 18 months, the judge can still grant you that option but you will need to either submit a trial by written declaration request or go to court to request that. 2nd traffic school is not granted very often but it does happen. How does the rest of your record look? What was your last year ticket?

My last year ticket was for speeding from Riverside county. This one is from San Bernardino county. Maybe the judge won't see the record from Riverside county and let me go to traffic school?

CVC is a uniform code so it applies regardless of the county. How many hours was your last year's traffic school? If it was for a one point violation (i.e. 8 hrs) you may be eligible for an additional 12 hrs under CVC 41501(a):

"41501 The court may order a continuance of a proceeding against a person, who receives a notice to appear in court for a violation of any statute relating to the safe operation of a vehicle, in consideration for attendance at a licensed school for traffic violators, a licensed driving school, or any other court-approved program of driving instruction, and, after that attendance, the court may dismiss the complaint under the following conditions:
(a) If the offense is alleged to have been committed within 12 months of another offense which was dismissed under this section, the court may order the continuance and, after the attendance, dismiss the complaint. The court may order attendance at a licensed school for traffic violators which offers a program of at least 12 hours of instruction."
