Supercharger questions

Hi,

It's a common understanding that a SC uses 40-60 bhp of your engine output to be able to produce boost.

1) If so, the milage has to get worse compared to stock. Is it like this ?
2) From which rpm does a SC provide effective boost to compensate this power-loss ?

lol. I find #1 kinda funny. In my experience, those who wish to install SC's and add more perfomance usually aren't too concerned with mileage. Not saying there's anything wrong with being concerned about. Just funny is all.

A gear driven centrifugal SC system using a properly sized bypass system has virtually 0 drag on the engine when it is not generating boost (less than 50-70% throttle usually). Even under boost a gear driven centrifugal SC unit has very low power consumption, considerably lower than other types of superchargers.

Fuel economy usually remains very similar to stock during normal driving with a properly tuned centrifugal SC setup.

Well, honestly, with the range of the M3 being as pathetic as it is, it is a significant concern to me.

I barely get 200 miles out of each tank and my light comes on around 160-170. Any upgrade that reduced mileage to 130-140 miles per tank would be completely ruled out for me. I hate going to the gas station that often. I would honestly rather have an extra 100 miles per tank than 100 more horsepower.

Good to hear that the supercharger doesn't affect MPG too bad when you're not on it, though.

it really shouldn't either way cause youll get to speed faster and you probly drive slow if your really that worried. It shouldn't even be a thought if you want more power cool, but if you dont then dont.

But i will go s/c till we get some turbos in there.
