Limp Home Mode - Again

My E92 decided it did not want to go while returning from a shopping trip on Sunday - Engine alert and car went in limp home mode. Stopped, turned the engine off, waited, restarted, and errr - don't like it - limp mode. Attempted again, same thing. Result, telephone BMW Assist - car picked up and off to the BMW store for repair -

Just learned, vacum pump and sensor need replacing - don't know yet which one???? Stay tuned.

There's a vacuum pump? Wonder what's for. Car does have a brake booster, and usually that's the only source of vacuum a car needs (plus a vacuum reservoir for the vents, but not a pump). But limp mode because of that ? Keep us posted.

Car is due back today, or tomorrow (on a roll back). And, yep, I think it was brake related. They said "pump," however that could mean anything. Initially, I am never interested in what is wrong, only what is being done to correct the issue. Afterward will come the "why the F did it do that"........I am not happy. This is the second time the car has limped home with its tail between its legs. Will report.

Update, BMW just called. The part, A Vacuum Pump, a component of the brake system, has to be replaced, along with the Vacuum Line. Now, you ready for this - The Pump has to come from the Mother Land, and will be here mid next week. No idea what caused the pump to require replacement. Saga will continue.

Seems like if any of the parts (except oil and air filters) for the car are M3 specific, then they come from Germany. I don't know why they don't stock M3 parts in the USA. This is their largest market.

That's what I meant by 'brake booster' .

Now that I remember, when I removed the airbox and plenum to check my idle valve hardware, I remember seeing what looked like a small, cylindrical vacuum pump right under the airbox. I figured it probably was a vacuum regulator, more than a pump, but maybe it's a pump indeed. Maybe that's the racket I hear when first starting the car; thought it was the ABS pump.

At least it's an easy fix OP, so all is well. But please ask when you take the car what the hell it's for, although it's very likely nobody will know . The other question is why limp mode. Did you feel any increased effort on the brake pedal? With the big a$$ brake booster a pump should only be needed if our cars had the start-stop feature, which they don't. Weird. Good luck.

Interestingly enough, my wife went in for her annual checkup and her LDL's were elevated. The Dr. stopped and ask her if she drove an M3 with DCT. She said yes and he told her he thought so. We traded the car in for a 6MT and her LDL's are now completely normal. He had initially prescribed a software update but we wanted to be safe and just got rid of the car.

Well, it took over two full weeks, but my M3 was delivered back home today. No paper work, so don't know exactly what all was done. Paper work in the mail, but I know a vacuum pump, (somehow brake related) sent from Germany, along with a vac. line has been replaced and installed. Dealer was very apologetic. Good service considering. I say that based on the car NOW BEING FIXED. We'll see.
