For those with MPE - need some quick feedback

My local dealer is willing to match on-line pricing for a MPE. All of my research suggests this is the right exhaust for me (no drone, OEM part, subtle good looks, not so loud to become tiring, etc..). I recognize that these attributes are subjective....

I am about the pull the trigger on purchase and install of the MPE -

Question for those that own the MPE -

At cold start - would you say it is 10% louder than stock or more like 30%. I hope to have cold start notably louder as I really dig the M3 metallic cold start engine sound. I only drive my m3 about 3/4 days a week and appreciate the cold start "this is something special" experience

During a 60 mph cruise in 7th gear (DCT) - is it any louder than stock?

Does it provide any of the exotic sound of say a Ferarri when revved? I know the M3 is not a Ferarri but looking for that high rpm velvety sound vs a Hemi SRT lumpy bark sound?

Thanks! I do not have an opportunity to hear a MPE live

Cold start was definitely a lot louder, probably the biggest difference other than wot high rpm

Very slightly louder than stock at cruise just enough to be heard over the road/wind noise.

It accentuates the higher frequency noises more than low frequencies except at cold start where it is bassier

Over priced, Heavy, about as good lookn as stock(Boo), had have a track record of cracking, go Akra, or ESS($1950) theyll Look WAY better and sound better and the Akra weighs about 1/3 as much.

Sound is subjective but I think you might be wrong on your weight figures(calling it "heavy" is laughable) and the grossly exaggerated track record of "cracking." Inconel is much stronger than steel, that's why it is used so extensively in racing. Much better cooling, durability than even titanium. I researched it quite a bit before I bought it. For my taste, there is no better sounding exhaust for the E9x. Akra, nice exhaust but you wanna talk about over the over-priced MPE and then suggest an Akra? And the sound...yawn. JMO

So on to the facts according to BMWusa.com:

The MPE weighs 40% lighter than stock or ~20lbs.

Stock weight is ~50lbs and the MPE is ~30lbs

So your saying the Akra is 10lbs? 1/3 the weight of the MPE?

I just checked Akras website. They state the slip on titanium exhaust is 14.1kg lighter than stock.

So the respective weights are:

Stock: ~50lbs
MPE: ~30lbs
Akra: ~20lbs

Akra does not sound even close to an MPE. It's very boomy and loud at low RPM and costs a shitload more. I don't even know why people would recommend it over the MPE.

uh...Dan..because it's lighter and made of titanium and will never crack. It's only a few hundred dollars more for the Akra, even less difference if you find a sponsor on here that's willing to deal.

I got my Akra for $3000 back in the day before the price hike.

But all in all, MPE is an excellent choice provided it will not crack.

I wonder if they are cracking cold climates or with track use or if it's just random. Mine has nearly 40,000 miles on it and it's fine

Mine has been on for 23k miles and not a single problem. The sound was exactly what I wanted for this car.

Hoping the thread does not turn into a MPE vs. (Other product).
Just looking for feedback on the % increase in volume as described in the first post.
Thanks

I agree, but people should try and refrain from posting incorrect information as well.

We should all try to be helpful but at the end of the day it's mostly preference.

Based on what you're looking for, the MPE should deliver. There are no Ferarri tones to be had but I think it has an exotic note that is beautifully matched for the S65. Maybe look into a full IPE exhaust for Ferrari like tones but...there goes the neighborhood. I'm on my second MPE, I've tried a few other Race and Sport exhausts just for fun but nothing has topped the MPE. It is a favorite for a lot of us for good reason. There are also a lot of non-MPE fans too and some serious haters. You'd think an MPE killed their family or something.

This motor does sound pretty exotic with no muffler but that's not a practical solution

Thanks for the feedback. Curious - why "second" MPE?

I would not put it at 10% louder but more of 50%. In basement carpark this will be further amplified with awesomeness.

Brand new MPE will be quieter. As you put on more miles, the MPE gets louder.

At 60mph with no engine load, it's just marginally louder than Stock.

The sweet spot for MPE is between 3900-4900rpm when under engine load. Anything above is just pure induction/engine noise.

So far I have not experienced any drone. I used to have a custom exhaust which droned about 2k. The MPE is perfect. Loud when you want it, Quiet when cruising.

No way will the M3 sound like a Ferrari (assuming F430/458). Ferrari uses flat plane crank compared to our crossplane S65. The firing order is also different.

The exhaust gases travel a much shorter distance compared to M3.

The MPE gives an exotic sound at 3900-4900rpm. This is something I have not heard when I used my Custom Exhaust and other reputable brands. All of which does not give an exotic sound in that RPM range. You'll have to hear it for yourself to understand what I mean.

Thanks guys. And BTW - I know a m3 will never sound like a Ferrari - my hope was trying to convey that I'm after that higher pitch exotic sound vs the low and loud bark of large liter/cubic inch V8's.
Last year at the Montreal F1 there were some sweet cars downtown revving while waiting for the traffic lights. The small high rpm V8 sounds (to me) so much better than the giant lumpy bark of the
big motor cars. Just my humble opinion.

Anyway - other than cold start the stock system is all but silent.

I worry a little about MPE reputation to crack.

Likely will pull the trigger and order Monday. Considering ceramic coating.

I agree. Bigger fan of the higher pitched exotic sounds but I heard it's very hard to obtain in the M3. Let us know how you like the MPE.

I left it on my last e92 when I sold it. On my new e92 I tried a Corsa before getting another MPE. I ended up selling the Corsa and going with the MPE. It's been my favorite for years but I still like checking out other mufflers to satisfy the mod itch.

Just do the Oem. exhaust mod.! For me personal it sounds even better than MPE,drove with both ,no worries about cracks and save a lot of money !
And about the ceramic coating for the MPE, outside it's ok but saw some cases with inside on piping welds cracks and will create vibration noises !
And to open up the MPE, no way !
Note ;I have a video of Oem. exhaust mod. vs MPE, and if you want to,i can post it right here !(up to you ? )
