broken wheel stud

Last Saturday we were doing a bunch of ride along/joy rides in the E46 M3. It consisted of back to back ride for 1-1.5 hours three times that day. The car rolled into the hot pits and the stud just dropped off the car. It broke inside the hub so will need to be drilled out. The studs were about 1 1/2 yr. old. Just a reminder to replace your studs this winter........we have a full set on order.

that sucks. good to know. i usually give them 2 seasons but may rethink. i also dont abuse the car like eddie can.

Thinking about getting studs and heard good things about the durability of Vorshlag's offering. Any personal experiences with theirs? $5.50 per stud definitely ain't cheap, but it's cheap for car mods and obviously this isn't somewhere you skimp. I have their camber plates and have been very happy with them.

I've used their studs and they are good quality. However, just like the OP, one of mine broke after 1.5 years too so I replaced them. I think I even started a thread just like this one

Bimmerworld usually has studs during their Xmas sale so I make that an annual purchase.

I had no idea that this was a regular replacement part!?

Is this only for aftermarket studs or is this recommended for stock ones as well?

Yeah, I didn't realize it was a maintenance part either; not sure I want to spend ~$200 on studs every year. Just one more thing.

The stock setup uses lugs, not studs, which are far less likely to break off due to design and the fact that they're not practically cemented into the hole with red LocTite. That stuff grips so tightly that to remove a stud you have to heat it to about 500 F with a torch to melt the LocTite before you have a prayer of getting it out.

Oh okay cool thanks for the clarification on studs vs lugs.

I thought about getting these http://ind-distribution.com/ind/cate...ugnuts-set-821 to make wheel changes easier but just ended up getting a wheel hanger from ECS.

I too didnt realize extened studs needed to be replaced, let alone every year. I track with stock lugs and was mad I didnt install/buy extended studs.... not any more after reading this.

You should be replacing stock bolts as well if tracking the car. Lots of things become wear items once you track including wheels. I have used apex and turner studs.

Yes you are right. I think that a lug that is repeatedly used (when changing wheels for track use) will actually wear out faster than studs.

Very good point. I wonder the replacement interval on stock lugs.

Wouldn't try to find out. Just switch to studs and replace every 1-2 years depending on the amount of days you do and level of driving.

I opted for studs when I did my 5-lug conversation on the GT3. So far so good.

A year is a good guideline to replace lug bolts AND studs. Think about the lateral loads they see on the track.

With that said...

Properly installing the studs will help (don't need to torque them down).
Properly torqueing lug nuts will help (don't do it when they are hot).
I just check for loose studs throughout the day, I don't re-torque (ends up in overtorquing)
If you ever drive the car and the wheel was not seated properly against the hub, replace the studs. They will fail much quicker.

Funny think about BMWs. If I've ever seen a car with a wheel that comes off at the track...its a BMW. 5 so far. I have never seen another marques lose a wheel. Just my observations.

Yes studs are to be replaced ever so often. When exactly depends on how much track time and how hard you are capable of pushing the car. There is a big difference between a beginner/intermediate driver and a guy that can bring the car to with in an inch of its life. Every 1-2 years should be fine for most but once a year for those that push the car.
For perspective: This car has seen one 45 min race, practice, quali, Three time trial days and the equivalent of 20-25 track days this year.
Personally I feel most comfortable buying studs from either Bimmerworld or Turner.....they race the products they sell.
