Oil Pan cracked
Hi guys,
a stone yesterday apparently cracked my oil pan...Oil was leaking heavily, fortunately I immediately noticed and stopped 200 feet later... I was wondering, what kind of costs am I looking at to get this fixed? Wondering if i should get insurance involved or not. It's my first "accident" in the US so I want to get as much info as i can before talking to the dealer/insurance thanks for the headsup! |

A stone cracked your oil pan? How large was the stone to do such damage? Anyhow, a stock oil pan should run you around $1200.00 plus you'll need oil and I would suggest changing the filter while you're at it so add another $225.00 for oil and filter depending on where you get your oil from. I saw Ebay had a sale 12 liters of castrol 10w-60 for $170.00. Good luck hopefully no engine damage.

no i'm not sure if its the oil pan. I'm far away from a technician or a person who knows anything about the inner workings of the car i drive unfortunately. I was leaking a lot so i thought it might have been the pan...
I guess i have to wait for the dealer to tell me their assessment and then circle back with you guys...might have posted a bit early |

Alright, it's the Oil Pan...
they quoted me 4300$ incl. tax.....that sounds insane given that the oil pan is around 1200$ - that parts all together are around 1850$ he said, that means 2450$ in labour? |

Given how well protected the underside of the engine bay is I am surprised a stone or whatever the objected penetrated all to crack the oil pan. That's an insane thought just like the cost of the replacement. I will put it down to a weakness in the production process and have it replaced under warranty, if that applies. Hopefully you won't off the road for a long time and good luck.

That's more expensive than I thought it would be. I'd go through insurance too, but try and say the rock or whatever object was moving so you only pay your comprehensive and your premium won't be affected.
I'd also consider getting the oil pan welded depending on the severity of the crack. You'd have to have it completely removed so depending on install prices, that might not save much money over going through insurance. |

i have another question. since this is a leased vehicle, do i need to report this accident to another party (i.e. BMW)? I have filed a claim with my insurance and the car will be repaired with original BMW parts etc..
Just wondering since its my first ever accident in the US thanks! |
