LoJack question to owners

Guys,

My car will be here in a month and the dealer offered to install LoJack. Who has any experience with the device? I think it is approx. 1600 US.

I posted on another forum but could not get much info.

Thanks in advance,

Tamas

$1,600 will pay for quite a bit of BMW Assist subscriptions and that's after the included 4-year subscription of the Safety Plan that comes with the car. The Safety Plan includes Stolen Vehicle Recovery. No need for LoJack that I can see.

I have it in my car. I think is more of an insurance thing. They supposed to recover your car quickly. Hope that I'll never have to find out though.

The BMW Assist Safety Plan, included for 4 years with the car, includes Stolen Vehicle Recovery and a certificate that can be used for an insurance discount if your insurance company provides one.

While LoJack makes us of a transmitter in the car and reception equipment in police cars that then find your car through a direction finding process the BMW Assist Stolen Vehicle Recovery capability uses the cars TCU, its awareness of its own location, and BMW's ability to contact the car to obtain from the car its location which they then communicate to police.

The one possible gotcha with BMW Asisst's Stolen Vehicle Recovery is if the car is outside cellular coverage or is out of view of the GPS satellites.

You know, that is exactly what I told them, when they were selling me the LoJack. They told me that BMW assist will not do receoveries. So I guess I was taken then. Oh well +1 for the stealership.

///M Rakete,

Thanks for the answers. I have a Cayman S coming, so it will not have the BMW Assist. It does have a factory alarm, though. The car will be insured by State Farm and they do not give a discount based on LoJack...Since my house and my Mini is insured by them, I am not going to go to another insurance company.

If you get LoJack Early Warning you will get a text message and an email if your car is moved rather than going to where your car was parked and discovering that it is gone. We have LoJack Early Warning in all of our cars.

Where is the certificate for the BMW stolen vehicle recovery located? I have the Assist Safety Plan but never saw a certificate for it.

Do You Really Want It BacK?

I don't really want a stolen car back. Be sure you have insurance to cover the value of the car (or what you owe if that's higher) and don't worry about it.

It should have been given to you as part of the BMW Assist enrollment paperwork when you picked up your car at the dealership.

Good point. I will probably skip LoJack.

ase2dais:
The 1600 quote came from the LoJack people. 650 would be a very good price.

I paid $700 for LoJack. $1,600 is too much.

I have the early warning system installed, it is 100 bucks a year, I think, and I have yet to activate it. If it was my DD, it would be a no brainer. Nothing better than running outside to find some asshole stealing your car, pulling him out and beating the hell out of him.

What if the guy (or guys) is bigger and tougher than you are, or has a weapon and knows how to use it?

Im 6'6 280. Not many people are bigger than me.

If he's tougher he should would probably be trying to be a UFC fighter, not wasting time stealing cars.

This isn't texas, so not everyone has a gun. lol. Way harder to get a gun here, even illegally.

Statistics show that non-violent criminals steal car's, and its an M, so it takes slightly more skill, which brings in a higher class of thief, less likely to do stupid things like cary weapons for car boosts.

And if he has a gun/is tougher/is bigger/has a partner, I will fight for my property. Worst case scenario, he has a gun, and I shat myself and let him take the car.

I have never had Lojack before and would not pay for it.

However, it was included with new purchase from dealer (it was not a separate line item). I do like the idea of being notified if car is moved .... but hope I never have the need to use the service.
