I respectfully disagree. I think price doesn't really matter between these two. Most people that can afford the 1M can afford the M3.

Disagree, starting prices are around 10k difference (12k if you compare 1m coupe to m3 coupe) and then add the options. M3 has more options and will bring final tally up higher - compared to the 1M. You can be looking at a 15k-20k difference in pricing once you add everything up.

Your threshold between beautiful and ugly is so narrow, or you are so biased you can't even concede the two cars share so many design elements. Either way anyone who claims the 1M is ugly and the M3 is beautiful loses the credibility in this discussion.....
I think they are both nice looking cars!

aside from the wheels, mirrors and shark fin I don't see a whole lot of similarities. One thing I do like about the 1M is the exaggerated rear wheel arches. Come on BMW, put those damn things on the M3. Would look much more aggressive IMO.

+1

I totally agree...I'm a sucker for 'flared fenders'. Some of my favs are the 911 turbo or c4 arches; the e46 and the e30. I know they are flared somewhat on the e92 but its really really slight.

1M even beat M3's lap time on top gear

although, it still looks like a midget..

I think the 1M looks more E46 M3 than the E9Xs, so more raw and aggressive looking .. gonna be sick when we start seeing 'em tastefully modded; lowered a bit with some nice wide wheels and good rubber

I do like the 1M...except for the looks. To me, I have to love looking at the car every morning if I am going to drop $45k+ on it.

I think the biggest difference is the curb weight, isn't the 1M about 300 lbs lighter?

He means it will overheat. You will go into limp mode faster then you can say limp mode. The 335i had the same problem.

I doubt it. BMW has added vents and coolers. This is not the first release of the 335i. It has been tested on the track. Big tracks and small tracks, and it has held up fine. I think the 1M is an awesome car and that the torque makes it great fun in daily driving. If I was looking for a little car, I would be looking at the 1M. I am not surprised M3 owners feel threatened and are defensive. The 1M will be surprising them on the street and on the track. I did not write winning -- I wrote surprising. It will win some and lose some. The DCT M3s will do better in the impromptu encounters.

Interesting to compare the dimensions between the 1M and the e92. Some seem closer then they appear based on pictures.

I test drove a 135 before buying my E90M3. The 135 felt like my E36M3, which I like a lot and am not trying to replace. The E90M3 obviously has 4 doors and certainly felt noticeably bigger inside. A few centimeters here and there can make a big difference in feel. The numbers are interesting, though -- it really is just a few centimeters here and there.

I would hope that the new 1M is a little faster than the almost 4 year old M3. Or that would mean that ///M is not making any progress in technology or development

Could someone explain this who knows more than me... what I mean is that testing two cars 30 - 50 in 4th gear doesn't necessarily prove much because the gearing could be so different... am I wrong? I would think that 30 - 50 in whatever is the BEST gear for that car would be the comparable result... what am I missing?

These are tests that measure mid-range power - the kind of performance you'll likely feel on the street when you're not gunning for red line.

In my opinion, the M3 is already a strong performer in the mid range, as an example showing a 5.9 second time from 50 to 70 in high gear in a standard Car & Driver road test. That's a very good time. The 1M did a 5.6 second time in this test, because it makes a bunch of torque down low. Once you get past the lag, it's a killer, as evidenced by this 5.6 number, which must include some fairly serious lag when starting at 50 in top gear.

This kind of test is useful in getting to know about the car's passing power, meaning do you have to downshift or not. That in turn has some importance because a downshift costs you time, on the order of a second or more.

Lazy speed is the two-word description for reponsiveness out on the road without downshifting. Textbook analysts tend to discount it, but every single driver will smile when experiencing this characteristic.

Bruce

You are comparing a car in its power band with a car that is not.

That was my point earlier. The 1M isn't faster than the M3 in any way unless you look at tests where the M3 is not in its power band. Put both cars in the correct gear at 50mph and then accelerate to 70mph and see which one gets there first.

The reality though is that none of this really matters anyway... they are both great cars. Both with pros/cons. Some will love the 1M, some the M3.

Downshift and you're in the powerband...I get that. These numbers are misleading for the M3 but show how the 1M pulls hard in every gear.
