Really depends where you are in San Francisco. In a lot of residential areas, you have kids/young adults who live at home with the parents and drive around nice cars. Since housing is so expensive, they spend money on toys instead. It's pretty common especially since 1/3 of the population is Asian and living in multi-generational homes is normal in Asian culture. That's another reason why you see $100k+ cars just parked on the sidewalk outside.

My point exactly. That's why I said I'm my area. 2000sf in SF goes anywhere from 1m-5m. Salaries are much higher here in general. 6 figures very common.

Agreed. I sorta did the same when I was in my early 20s. At that time I already had a M3 then an M5 then a 750I and was still living at home. The BIG difference was I bought a 3 unit building and rented them all out. Worked my angles cause i didnt have a trust fund lol. Had my cake as ate it too.

But the salaries dont proportion down to the house though right?

So a 100k salary would not be 33k?

The six figure salary may be common but depends where you live--the city, marin co, or peninsula I would say yes. East bay, not so much. I wanted to move back to Cali but I can stand the fact that half of my paycheck would have gone to taxes.

Both car and home payments are on auto-payment. I don't know how much it costs.

It seems like salary adjustments never truly make up for the higher cost of living. However, many of the highest paying jobs are in the places that are most the most expensive to live in, naturally.

Best job you can find + inexpensive place to live + surroundings you enjoy + reasonable commute = win!

My last trip to Colorado has me thinking about taking a job as a ranch hand...

This doesn't work well, cause someone can be living in a million dollar home and have $700,000 in mortgage debt.

The best way to do this is how much is your car worth (minus car note debt) in the used market compared to total assets held.

I kind of always want to know this. Not so much because I am nosey but because I want to know what profession to tell my son to go to college for.

Outside of inheritance or lottery winners I don't really care about those.

I see all these young adults driving ridiculously nice cars. Like in Irvine you can go to cars and coffee and see 200 cars every Saturday morning. I see these $125K plus cars from all makes and inevitably a 25-32 yr old gets out. I just wonder what they do to make that kind of dough to spend on a car. Or what percent just have a ridiculous lease or loan pmt with no other savings or assets.
