Vote under E46. Just about every generation had race/spec edition models. Poll would have been over 100 choices long.

Okay, some people are just plain NUTS! The E9x M3 is the greatest? So to each their own opinion wise, but I don't think anything new can be the best. It has to be the older stuff. I voted the E30 M3 because it changed the definition of what a sports car could and should be. The E9x M3 is an evolution of that. The E30 is also the winningest Touring car ever, etc.

Anyway, that's my .2. I had such a difficult time between the E30 M3 and the Batmobile. God, what a brilliant car that was, too!

Charlotte. Bought my 2nd BMW at Leith in Raleigh. My first BMW was a 1976 2002 (a rust-free NC car). So you live in the triangle?

for me it is the E36 M3 in estoril or Dakar because that was the first time I was introduced to BMWs and M cars. I saw the Dakar M3 in a magazine ad (at the time I was into muscle cars or rice burners when rice burning wasnt gay) and I've been hooked ever since

It's the e30 m3. The m1 and earliest m5/m535 put the m brand on the map but the e30 showed the world that BMW could do. The car completely redefines what you think is important in a sports car; it changes the perception that magazine stats like HP, 0-60, and skidpad numbers are what define a sports car and quickly things like steering feel, mechanical interface, and how a chassis communicates become the more important measuring factors of a sports car. It's that good.
