There was a joke at Bimmerfest - Chevy has announced that it will give everyone who buys a Camaro a free mullet.

When is the last time you drove anything American? My 2004 Cobra was just as fun if not funner to drive then the 135i I have. They have come a long way into driving pleasure and engagement ... Build quality? I have more creaks and rattles in my 135i then I have had in my last 3 American built cars (and last 4 cars total (other was mazda)).

I for 1 will be test driving the 2010 SS ...

Their sales were down over 40% last month. I'd guess they'll start getting the picture pretty soon. I think the Boxter/Cayman sales were down over 50% compared to last year. When it comes to street cars, they just don't offer anything that justifies such a huge premium IMO. I really wanted to like the Cayman, but I would have felt foolish writing that check with so much better performance values out there.

Ahh...maybe there lies the problem. I have never driven either but associate with a few people that have the S. At 70k, it is simply too much IMHO. The owners I know have said that there is a BIG difference between the Cayman and the Cayman S.

I think they would be great cars if the pricing was more like low $40k for the regular car and $50k for a well equipped S, but there options are more outrageous than BMW's.

My buddy just got a G8 - pretty unimpressive. The interior is especially lacking, but he got a good deal on it so he's OK with it. I also get an American car every time I do a rental. They're better than they were, but they are what they are in the price range they aim for. A twenty thousand dollar car is not going to compare all that well with a forty thousand dollar car no matter what nationalities are involved.

Yup...I agree. I think its in Porsche's philosophy somewhere that they must always be unattainable for newcomers. I personally would rock the shit out of an M3 Sedan over a Cayman S. Yeah, I know they're totally diff but still! In the back of my head, I'll always feel like I'm driving a 911-lite.

21 inch wheels? really? 2010 model year as well. Takes too long for GM to get things done.

Edit: good pricing though. Just not sure when they will bring it as a 2010 model.

You can order now, start of production is february with deliveries in early March. So 3 years and 2 months after the concept was first shown.

I don't get it? Those numbers seem awfully slow for 400+ HP.

1 series is faster at the same price? Who in their right mind would pick the camaro?

EDIT: Aggressive pricing, but if it can't break into the 12s, I don't see it as worthwhile over anything else in the pricerange.

March is pretty good, that is a long 2010 production year, I wonder if that will help resale.

I was more refering to the fact they are now several years behind the mustang and a year behind the challenger, but I think I will like GM's offering the best out of the three. I could easily see the wife driving one with their 300hp v6, or maybe a v8 depending on how the fuel economy is. She was wanting a small SUV, but all I have to do is throw Transformers in the dvd player and she falls in love with the camaro. I would just have to get used to seeing it everywhere.

21" wheels? Are they left over from Suburbans? I suppose the Chevy marketeers wanted them for the look because it sure won't help you move any faster. I wonder what the tires will be. I want to hear how well that rides.

Still early production times. The GTO would get into the 12s easily once in the hands of owners. This car should hook up better, so I'd say high 12s will be no problem.

Jeremy, you can count on 1 hand the number of GTO owners that pulled 12s stock. The independent rear suspension made it a great GT car, but not so great on the strip.

As far as the Camaro goes, I don't know if it'll hit 12s stock, but with a set of decent tires it should. And if you talk about mods, there's nothing easier to modify than a Chebby small block. A new cam, headers, and exhaust and you're talking about 500+hp

If the Camaro had a solid rear axle like the Mustang then you might be talking about running 12s stock, but do you really want an SRA? Would that really legitimize the car in your eyes?

Base V8 Camaro - 360 hp 6.0 LS-based motor
Camaro SS - 430 hp LS3

There were LOTS of GTOs that were in the 12s bone stock. I know three owners other than myself who did it at Moroso in S. FL. I did it running the factory 18" tires. It was a given on drag radials. There's a little heat issue with GTOs that screws them up for drag racing. All you had to do was jump the fan circuit to get the heat away from the IAT sensor and she'd run like hell all night with very little cooldown.

That business about the rear axle...sure they were tricky, but I was pulling 1.8 60' times on a regular basis, and got a 1.7 on a freshly prepped track. That was in a 6 speed on the stock 235s. I've seen automatic cars running 1.6s with drag radials.

IMO if it can do high 12s at 108-110 it's in good position.

I think it has to be significantly faster than German and Japanese competition to carve out a good market share. I do like the direction they've taken with it, I just wish it were a little smaller and lighter.

You can order shorty headers, cat back exhaust and a CAI direct from GMPP when you order the car. This will be a fast car, probably the best bang for your buck out there and it looks good too. Right now I’m pretty much looking at a 2SS/RS or a 2 year old M3 when its time to buy in 18 or so months. I’ll still test out a 135 again but it’s now a distant 3rd.

Reader’s digest version:
LS is the base V-6 with 300hp, cloth seats, steel wheels etc.
LT1 gives you 18” alloys, fog lamps and a few other things
LT2 gives you leather, 19” rims, Bluetooth, 9 speaker stereo and lots of other stuff

SS1 V-8 with 422hp (or 400hp if you get the auto) cloth seats, brembos, 20” rims, Sat radio and tons of other stuff
SS2 is the same as LT2 but for the SS, leather stereo, etc.

RS package gets HIDs, Halos, spoiler, dark gray rims and other stuff (available on the LT!, LT2 or SS)

Basically the SS2 is loaded except for the sunroof or if you want stripes or accessories like headers and exhaust.

Head’s up display like the Corvette won’t be available until spring/summer 2010 though.

An SS2 with stripes, sunroof and couple of other things I want is coming up under the base price of a 135. And you just know after a year or so you can get these for invoice easy. So 33k or less. If that’s the case I may just spend 1-2k on a custom Alcantara interior.

The only thing that will kill it for me is if handles like a pig which I don’t think it will. 900 more lbs will take some getting used to over my RX8. That’s why I still have the 135 on the list, not too heavy but fast and agile.

Now this car is definitely more in my price range. But, after owning a Ponitac for a few years. I don't know... If I had to chose this or the G8 I dont know what I would get.
