So I'm seriously considering upgrading my idrive to the apply car play that MMI prime provides, the install looks like it's a fun Saturday DIY.
My question is I've seen you need to plug into the aux and I'm curious if I have premium sound in my car does that interfere with the quality of my music? Or does it not have anything to do with it ( assuming I'm paired wirelessly and or wired) Any input would be appreciated! Thanks |

As I understand it the MMI system does not have to connect via AUX on some systems. This thread has a ton of details and will likely answer your question completely.

I have MMI Prime installed in my car. The system sound functions thru the aux port. There is minimal
Sound degradation from factory when using audio in MMI prime. It does not interfere with your factory system. You switch back & forth. I chose not to perform the coding to remove the aux but from what I've heard, you'll receive factory quality sound from MMI if doing so. The cons are that you'll lose your aux/usb port functions which I personally don't think it's worth it.

Documented the heck out of this in my thread above.
The Carsara unit there is a noticeable quality improvement going from Aux cable in the console to rear of the headunit. I would expect the same regardless of the unit you choose. But it can be hard without taking the time to compare them back to back and having them EQ'ed. I lived with my unit pre-coding for a few months then coded it, and at the high frequencies the improvement is noticable. Audio over Aux will never be as good as digital via the Combox or CD. But it's completely fine in a car with such poor sound deadening.
