Helmet Advice

Buying my first helmet....is there a difference between a "Motorcycle" helmet and "Car" helmet or are they the same thing?

Also does it make a difference if it is Snell vs DOT certified?

Thanks!

I believe one difference is Car helmets (or was it Snell) have fire protection (nomex).

The auto helmets are all fireproof and genreally offer less visibility. Motorcycle helmets offer more visibility and are not fireproof.

Think about it, you'd be hard-pressed to get trapped inside a burning motorcycle.

Don't skimp on the helmet - This isn't the place to save money.

One of the best quotes I've heard regarding the above: "If you have a 10 dollar head, buy a 10 dollar helmet..."

Ok so after some reading it seems the difference between the SA2010(Automobile class helmet) vs M2010(Motorcycle Helmet):

1. SA2010 is fire retardant
2. SA2010 is tested against roll bar impact - basically getting hit with small pointed object vs the M2010 when you fall of your motorcycle you would be hitting large flat object such as the ground
3. SA2010 has a smaller visor opening area
4. Some race tracks and race organizations require a SA rated helmet in the car and will not allow a M rated helmet

DOT vs SNELL
1. In a nutshell SNELL is much stricter certification than DOT
2. DOT certification is done on the honor system by the manufacturer - no actual verification by DOT that the helmet is what it says it is

hope this helps other looking for this info!
