2010+ tmps are new and cost about double of what 08-09 go for.

Different System

2008 & 2009 have receivers in the fenders. 2010 on has a central receiver. It's likely that the entire system is lower cost (for BMW) and possibly more reliable. Tischer has the best price I've found for the 2010 on sensors.

Tischer apparently sells both types (08-09 and 10+) at the same price based on VIN. It is a bargain for 10+ owners. Not so for 08-09 owners. For 08-09 owners tirerack is the way to go IMO (this is what I did). Just choose your car, add a random wheel, add OEM tpms from the link in the cart, remove wheels and you are left with the tpms appropriate for you car for about $194+shipping for 09 model.

I only asked about the 2010 +. I'll be surprised if they are uncompetitive on the early ones.

When I ordered my wheels from them they pointed me to this and told me to enter my VIN appropriately. So I ordered my OEM wheels from Tischer, but went to tirerack for tires and TPMS. I understand their need to avoid confusion so they price everything flat averaging the 08-09 price and the 10+ price. If I weren't too lazy to build the required bundle from individual parts, I may have gotten the same or a better price.

No complaints from Tischer though. They ARE great.

It's a great price for the 2010 + cars, but I can't imagine them selling many of the early sensors at that price. Thanks for the follow up. A friend asked me this weekend where to buy a new TPMS set for his 2009. I'll let him know that Tire Rack is likely a better source than Tischer.

Make sure your M3 build date is after 09/09 for the 2010 version TPMS, otherwise it's still older lower price version.

Let us know if you have any questions. =)

Correct - TPMS changed over to a single receiver unit for MY10 production, the transmitters (which are mounted in the tires) are slightly different than 08-09 models.

Not exactly sure - we'll be testing this week for verification on RDCII.

Hey r53s65 - couple questions for ya if you don't mind.

How do you know the sensors from tire rack are OEM? As far as I can tell it doesn't actually claim they are OEM sensors anywhere on the web page.

Are the sensors the same for 18s and 19s? I'm pretty sure they are but want to be 100%. I have 18s, and all the wheels it gives me for my car at tire rack are 19s. I don't want to end up with the wrong sensors.

Hmm, actually I found some 18's in the list, added them, clicked the TPMS link (which now said only $98 (!) for the sensors) and got this message:

"Your vehicle is equipped with a tire pressure monitoring system that requires a sensor to be installed in the tire and wheel assembly for proper operation.

At this time, Tire Rack does not have sensors available for your vehicle. The original sensors from your original wheels can be used or you may purchase new sensors elsewhere."

All they are is pressure sensors with an RF transmitter of some sort. I've not seen and can't imagine that the rim diameter matters. I suggest you PM or call (877.522.8473 ext 660) Ben@TireRack about what you need. I know he's familiar with the TPMS differences; because, I've seen posts that he's made about it. He should be able to answer your questions.

I called and I asked and they said "yes they are the same OEM sensors you would get from the dealer".

I believe so. realoem.com does not differentiate. I added and removed some 19' bbs ch wheels to get the sensors to appear in my cart. Attached is my final order.

Ben@tirerack should be able to explain the shortage of sensors currently and 18 vs 19 question.

EDIT: Just put some sensor in my car at tirerack (added wheels, added sensors from link in car, removed wheels). See attached.

Regardless of production date - wheel diameter has nothing to do with TPMS sensor compatibility.

However, there is a difference between MY08-09 and MY10+ sensors due to the newer TPMS systems going to a single receiver based-design rather than the previous versions equipped with four receivers.

Is there a functional difference in the valve stems (not sensors) from pre-09/09 and post 09/09?

I have a 2011 M3 and I purchased a set of 18" wheels from a 2008 M3. I have upgraded the sensors to the new sensors, but I kept the 2008 valve stems. The sensors mounted to the stems just fine.

There are no tires mounted yet, so for obvious reasons I would like to make sure everything will work BEFORE my winter tires are mounted on the 18" wheels.

Thanks for your help guys - I ordered the sensors. I guess there must be something messed up with Tirerack's page causing the strange discrepancy in messages when you put 18s in your cart and click the TPMS link vs. when you do the same for 19s.

The old sensors will not work with the new system, a different receiver is used on MY10+ vehicles.

Correct, I am aware of the new sensors, which I have already purchased.

What I am curious about is the valve stem itself.

The two pieces (sensor & valve stem) can be ordered separately. I already purchased four units of #4 below (new sensors with part # 36 10 6 790 054) and I currently have them mounted to the original valve stems that were on the 2008 wheels.
