So far not bad. Getting the stock off the base ring is next step and probably the hardest though.

M5 shifter came off base ring easy.

I just picked up my knob/boot/ring from the upholstery shop this morning. If you're in the Raleigh/Durham area, I'd highly recommend Auto Interiors and Tops in Raleigh. They charged me $50 to affix the boot to the ring and turned it around in two days.

For me, the ZHP knob has always been the platonic ideal of a shift knob; I had a buddy with an E46 330ci ZHP and always loved the way that the knob looked in the BMW interior. When I picked up my M3 two weeks ago, I knew that this was the first (and pretty much only) mod I would do.

So far, the 1-2 shift feels smoother and the shifter feels better in hand. As others have mentioned, the M5 boot leather is thicker, so I am having some difficulty getting the ring to seat all the way down properly in the front, but the back flips snapped in fine and it doesn't feel like it's moving anywhere. Hopefully with time it will wear in a bit and eventually I can press it down and snap it in, otherwise I imagine a combination of trimming some of the leather on the edge of the ring + some light taps with a rubber mallet could solve the problem.

It was a pain to get the thing to snap in. It's all because the m5 leather is thicker. Not sure how people simply tucked it in and got it to snap without using glue.

In the end I had to glue the leather to the base ring and trim off any excess. I also popped the console out and made sure all clips were seated from underneath.

Here's the finished product.

Just finished this install and easier than I thought. Swapped the rings and tucked. No glue.

Couple of tips:

*Use a lighter to heat the leather makes it easier to separate (used a flat head small screwdriver). Leather does not burn so no damage done to it. As already noted the OEM M3 takes longer than the m5 to separate the ring.

*Cut out enough for the tab to go in cleanly. When reinstalling, place a cloth over the ring then pound it in

*I would not glue due to all the small adjustments needed to make the m5 shift boot look clean.

All together 40 minutes while watching football. Happy with the results

Puzzled as my leather was definitely too thick to just tuck in and work. Model number I ordered for the m5 knob was 25112284205 which I believe is used in the newer m3 also.

There is an earlier version that apparently also works. Maybe the leather was thinner for that one. Can you confirm which model number was yours?

I just glued around the perimeter and called it a day. I couldn't get it to snap into place if my life depended on it.

Is ECS Tuning the cheapest source for the f10 shift knob/boot assembly?

F10 M5 Shift Knob Install Complete

I just finished installing the F10 shift knob with boot. I gotta give all the credit to my wife as she has a lot more patience than I do. She also took the stock boot off the base ring as that was a pain. She also trimmed and glued the boot to the stock base ring for me.

I would say the whole process took about an hour and a half spread throughout two nights. We used paper clips to clip the boot to the base before applying the glue. Again, huge thanks to her and to the forum for the DIY's. It went into place on the first try without any issues snapping back in. Onto the pictures.

Did the same tonight, but didn't use the lighter. Just used a butter knife to get the leather off of the stock ring. Took an hour total, not that bad.

Same part #. Start with the top and bottom then tuck in the sides when installing.

My shift knob keeps sliding off EVERYTIME I select 2nd gear.

Does anyone have the same problem? What is the solution to this?

You probably didn't push it on hard enough. I give it a good whack straight down after I've pushed it on.

The only obstacle I cam across was pulling the connecter off. Both pieces are awkward size and shape to get a good grip to pull.

Starting to think this could happen to most people especially those who said they didn't need to trim and simply tucked it in. It probably is not fully snapped into the console set. If you remove the entire piece (easy) and look from underneath you'll see exactly what I mean.

I did this mod over the course of 3-days. I had the same problem as most folks here, where the boot did not clip back in. I also have a pointy corner at the lower left corner (my poor glueing technique), that I've been able to round out since installation. Neither of these are a major deal for me though. I purchased the F10 knob from Morristown BMW on eBay.

Let me go take a pic of my M5 knob on my M3 boot. It was so much easier IMO.

No glue, no dealing with the ring not snapping in, popping out or just looking loose in some areas.

Here is my M5 Knob that I removed the M5 boot from with my M3 boot and ring. I have ZERO boot slack where it meet the M5 knob.

What did you do about the pegs on the bottom of the shift knob? On the M5 knob, when you remove the plastic ring there are 3 pegs sticking out from the bottom of the knob (to hold the ring). Did you wrap these in the leather boot and zip tie around that or cut them off?

F10 M5 Knob on M3

I just did my shift knob swap. Parts of it were a pain and I did use glue with mine. The snaps are difficult to get in on the bottom of the boots. Make sure to trim correctly. I advise not to use the glue and to just cut the leather to go over the tabs.

I can not get the boot back in! Fuck! What does removing the console do? How can you get it over the top of the boot once it's on?
