993 Turbo?

I've always liked the look of the wide body 993's and the one I would want to have would be the Turbo. My dad had one back in the '90s and I remember that car fondly. At the time it seemed ridiculously fast and it's remained on my list ever since.

I just wonder though, looking at the specs (let alone the price of entry), would I be underwhelmed now, years later? I know there's obviously more to it than numbers on a sheet; I remember the sound and the feeling of the car, but I don't know if I'm looking through rose colored glasses or not. I fear the M3 may have ruined me by setting the bar too high.

The Turbo feels on a different level compared to the M3. If it feels 'underwhelming' to you, you just might have to move up to an F1 car for excitement. lol

A 993 is a much more visceral car and is def no slouch. This is also prob the only car that has appreciated through the years as the last air cooled turbo Porsche car.

Yeah I know their values have held pretty steady probably since 99-2000 and are now ticking up. Not shopping anytime soon, but for GT-R money it seems like a unique alternative to that or a 997 turbo which will continue to depreciate.

I remember it being an awesome car but I just wonder if I'll be as impressed today. It has very similar performance specs on paper to the M3, and only weighs a couple hundred pounds less due to the 4WD. You can't exactly test drive one at a dealer anymore

I thought all Porsche 911 before the 996 platform had terrible handling and a tendency for unpredictable snap oversteer. Especially so with the Turbo. Weren't they called widowmaker?

Yeah I guess I could be asking more "is the 993 turbo worth it."

IMO many of these modern collectible cars are not worth it. NSX, E30 M3, etc I think are now priced out of desirability, unless you like them enough for their cool factor alone.

You could get a 997 turbo, but it would be a bigger, heavier car and a tremendously different experience.

I actually thought about getting an NSX at one point in time. Then I took a look at the prices that those 15 year old cars go for. I immediately stopped thinking and started looking at different cars instead

I had the privilege to drive one. Yea it's quick by normal standards, but don't expect GTR quick. Driving position was just absolutely weird. Pedals are offset to the steering wheel. Oh and that was one of the stiffest clutch I've ever used. It was definitely thrilling to drive my childhood hero though.

IMHO, that is still probably one of my favorite looking cars ever made.

I think that was one reason all the Turbos were 4WD. Its all wheel drive system was one of the best of its day, being an evolution of the 959.

Yeah all the older P cars as well as F cars have the offset pedal boxes as well as the P car has the pedals hinged from the floor which is a different/unique driving experience that you have to get used to.

Me too, many times! By the time I could afford one, I didn't want to anymore.

Yeah definitely a childhood poster car, and probably the pinnacle of 911 styling.

I totally agree about the NSX thing too. Yes it's got Honda reliability but the interior is sooooooooo early 90s Acura.

I can't get over the pricing on over 100k mile 91-93 cars.

The newer models (w/ flush headlights) are still a lot of money for what you get IMO.

Those cars really hold their value but it kind of turns me off to spend that much money on one

993TT is truly something to be experienced. Not comparable to today's high-tech cars, much unfiltered driving and the sound and feel of the road is unequal IMHO. Yes prices are high, but it also means you won't lose money on it

I have a 993 C4S (widebody and with the turbo aero so it looks just like a 993TT) and have considered upgrading to a turbo. But at the end of the day, I have other more modern cars that are faster than a 993TT (including a 650 whp 996TT) and what I really value out of the 993 are the looks, the driving experience, the feel, the materials, the quirkiness of the interior/controls and the smell (no joke - it has a really unique smell inside that brings out all kinds of nostalgia for me). The fact that its 282hp mean it is a little pokey isn't really a big deal for me. I can still have a lot of fun with it just enjoying the experience.

I feel the same way. I want one, but I don't want one that bad. It's just one of those cars where if you wanted one, you missed the boat.

Kind of like the Z3M, especially the clownshoe. They used to be pretty cheap actually, but the prices have gone up. Same applies to E30 M3. Too late now.

993TT is my dream car and i hope to have the opportunity to own one some day. I would get the RUF Turbo R conversion if i felt the need for more power.

We'll see about E90 M3, because E36 M3/4/5 can be had for cheaper than the coupes at the moment. And the crazy thing is E36 prices have started creeping up too, especially for the really clean ones.

But cars like the clownshoe, Z4M (heck even the non M coupe), 1M... those are going to be $$$
