Thanks south - I hadn't seen BF's report. That's unfortunate, especially when they already offer a DCT in the 135i. I guess we will have to wait for the next generation 1M to get M-DCT.

I just don't see the point of this car. It's not that light (3400 is still pretty heavy)... its essentially a boosted N54, and they slapped on some M3 suspension bits and think it now compares to an old e30M3.. get real
I had an e30 M3, it weighed 2700 lbs, was NA power and handled like a dream.

Also, what's with all the N54/N55 derivatives anyways? you have the the Z435is, 335is, 335i, 135i, and now this 1M...? Has the M Marketing dept gone crazy?

Just testing what exact derivative to use on the next gen M3 because at this point they have no freakn clue. LOL
Seriously though, all these derivates is a complete joke!

How many derivatives were there for the NA E46 and E92 M3?

My only concern is that the tendency of the 135i to understeer at the limit will still not be exorcised in the M version and that it won't come with EDC to make it even more versatile. We all know that it will only be equipped with a proper 6-sp manual so no DCT for the car.
Here is the link for some pictures of the partially uncovered orange-colored 1 series M coupe: http://www.bimmerfile.com/2010/08/27...w-1m-revealed/
Let's hear what you guys have to say about the pros and cons about 1 series M coupe vs the e90/e92 M3.

Phil
In direct response to your post:

pros of the 1M:
- will be cheaper then the M3
- lighter (by 200lbs. I know, not so big but still its 200lbs)
- will be as quick as the M3, but not as fast on higher speeds
- will have ability to be tuned (basically its a BMW tuned 135i with parts/pieces and a computer engine upgrade)
- good for peeps who don't want to buy the M3, which technically is the lowest hanging M car sold by BMW

cons of the 1M:
- gonna be expensive for what it is (if the 335is fully loaded is 59k, what will this thing cost?)
- Its basically using the N54 engine, which is going to come with the same problems all N54 cars have - ie HPFP
- You can buy a used 135i, mod it, spend less money and get the same amount of performance (minus the cool suspension stuff and quad exhaust the 1M will have)
- FI < NA

As a current M3 owner, I wouldn't buy the 1M. If I still didn't have the M3, I probably still wouldn't still buy the 1M. For what I think they will sell it for, it makes not sense to me. Too many other great cars (ie M3, Cayman S) that can be hand at that price. Again, I am interested to see what its performance levels are and what people will say about it once it comes to the market. But I'm sort of feeling its like the 335is but in the 1-series footprint....good car, but if its close to price of the M3, why not just get the M3?

What will it cost? I suppose we'll have to wait and see. It's hard to believe that it will be near the 335is cost since that's getting close to M3 price. I'm hoping the suspension bits will really transform how the car feels. But losing weight would probably do more to make the car feel sportier than all the trick suspension parts, IMO.

I really can't see an M3 owner getting one of these unless it were so much lighter that it would really be a better weekend toy. It is more for those who want the sportiness of the M3 but don't want to spend the money for the luxury, amenities, size and practicality. Although, it seems the price may still be too high for most people.

Cheers.

LOVE the look, including the regular 1 in person. If I was about 3 years younger with no plans to have kids soon (23-24) I'd definitely consider it

Too bad it won't get a normally aspirated engine. For a car that small (have you been in the rear seats of a 1-series? worse than the 3 coupe and that's not good) I'd rather have no back seat. Can you say Z4M coupe? Hello.

Cheers.

In the case of this car, I expect it will be completely deserving of the M badge, so no worries here

Hey guys I have a 2010 135i and have had a TON OF PROBLEMS.. Today I went to the dealer again and they asked my if I was going to upgrade to the 1M... First of all I just got my car... And why on Gods green earth would I buy another car that has a ton of problems... I was thinking when the 135i Died and I finished college (1 and a half years left till my Finance Degree) I might want a new M3... Are there a lot of problems with it???

My car is 5 months and has had 3 recalls and the car has been in service for the dash caving in, pop under passenger side air bag, stereo, radio, I pod, tail lights, the fire issue, loose exhaust, and windows not going up..

Care to elaborate the "fire issue"?

Imploding dash? Three recalls? Wow.

There were some teething problems with the DCT software (now eliminated) and the idle-valve issue which was an easy fix (haven't seen this issue in a long time, may be 08 specific); and some 08s with a possible bearing issue, but that remains to be seen. That's "full disclosure" and all and all the M3 has been solid. Not the wellspring of problems the N54 comes with (HPFP being foremost there).

I was told by the dealer that the heat in FL is sooooo bad that the dash airbag on the passenger side is deep into the dash and causes a indent ring around it... that was 3 months in...

Apparently in the pillars of the car, BMW put foam by the area where the seatbelt is grabbed in an accident and the friction causes the foam to catch fire...

Fixed it for you . And yes, they deserve it for abandoning the long M tradition of NA engines. And for the trucks too .

And to answer the thread's question, I could bet cash money no M3 owner would switch. Take care gang.

On our 128i I can see the outline of the passenger side airbag. It seems to have gotten more pronounced with being exposed to heat while parked outside at work during the summer.

Thanks! I forgot that fourth one didn't I? Couldn't agree more on the NA decision.

Good grief. Wow. "Hey, good news, we survived the crash". "Oh, wait, now we're on fire". I wouldn't be happy about the recall, but better than the alternative.

It gets hot a lot of places. AZ. SoCal. Central Valley in CA. Oz. So pretty bad testing and design on both that and the firestarter foam I'd say.
